EMPOLI. The Empolese Valdelsa in the red zone since Monday the 22nd for at least a week. The decision, scheduled for the afternoon of Friday 19, was anticipated by the mayor of Montespertoli, Alessio Mugnaini.
Which, in a post on Facebook, formalizes how the greatest restriction for ten municipalities in the district (Fucecchio is already in the red zone since last Monday along with the other leather territories) has already been taken by the president of the Region, Eugenio . Giani, and communicated with the mayors in a meeting held on the night of Thursday 18.
The mayor of Montespertoli, however, did not hide his disappointment as his municipality has the lowest data in the entire area. “We do not deserve it – he writes – but the logic of the sanitary districts prevails”.
The news was later confirmed by the president of the Union of Municipalities, the mayor of Castelfiorentino. Alessio Falorni, who explained that the Cuoio area will also be confirmed in the red zone and the Municipality of Barberino-Tavarnelle, on the border with Valdelsa, will suffer the same restrictions.
The explanation of the decision. The entire territory of the Empolese Valdarno Valdelsa Health Society will be a red zone as of Monday 22. Fifteen municipalities between the provinces of Florence and Pisa, for a total of more than 240 thousand inhabitants, will respect the maximum restrictions established by the Decree of the Prime Minister in an attempt to reduce the contagion rate that today exceeds 435 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants (the alert The threshold to pass in the red zone is set at 250), with peaks in some municipalities of the Leather District, already in the red zone for a week, exceeding 600.
The neighboring municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle will also join the 15, which yesterday participated with the mayor David baroncelli in the meeting between the president of the Region Eugenio Giani and the first citizens of Valdelsa Empolese and Lower Valdarno.
The choice of Giani, shared by the mayors, is to follow the latest indications of the ministerial decree that no longer speaks only of regions and provinces but also provides more restrictive measures for homogeneous subprovincial areas.
“To lower the contagion curve, a provision was needed for the entire area – commented the president of the SdS Alessio Spinelli – Today, in the situation in which we find ourselves, it no longer makes sense to do evaluations for individual municipalities ”.
Other areas in the red zone
Also for this reason, in last night’s meeting with President Giani, the desire would have arisen to establish other red areas in Tuscany in addition to the provinces of Arezzo, Pistoia and Prato. “Other municipalities close to us – explains Spinelli – are in delicate situations and I would not be surprised if the red zone was expanded even more”.
Hospital situation
The red zone, in addition to the data related to infections, is also highly recommended due to the situation of the hospitals. The pressure on the Empoli, Fucecchio and San Miniato hospitals is at maximum levels and in recent days it has also intensified on the hospitals in the Florentine area, thus excluding the possibility of transferring patients to other health facilities within the ASL .
“A truly suffocating situation – declares the president of the SdS, Alessio Spinelli – that we must improve at all costs. If the pressure on our structures does not reduce the risk of not being able to serve people, it could become really concrete ”.
Closed schools
As of Monday, March 22, all schools of all types and levels throughout the territory will be closed, including educational and childcare services. Contagion in schools does not seem to be particularly widespread, but in the meeting with President Giani the concerns of the National Scientific Technical Committee also arose, which would seem concerned about a possible “clandestine” contagion in schools, an inconspicuous contagion given by the fact that most students who test positive show no symptoms.
“To be sure that the infection rate in schools is really low – says Spinelli – it would be necessary to carry out exhaustive controls in all institutions exchanging thousands of students, a bit in line with what we did in some schools in September previous”. . of the reopening. In any case, I want to remind you that the schools will not be formally closed: they will remain open to support disabled students and children and young people with special educational needs who will continue to attend the classrooms together with small groups of their peers who will be present in rotation. I think this is a choice that makes us understand how social and relational needs are not considered inferior to the health needs of our communities ”.
Refreshments
The refreshments provided for in the study of the next Decree quinquies of the Government for the economic activities forced to close will not only affect the regions of the red zone, but will also include the activities of the provincial and subprovincial red zones such as Empolese Valdelsa and Bajo Valdarno. The provision will also be retroactive and therefore will also take into account situations prior to publication.
ChecksThe controls will be extended throughout the area to verify compliance with the restrictions by people, both through the Municipal Police and the police thanks to the collaboration with the Prefectures of Florence and Pisa that guaranteed collaboration and delivery of men to the territory. In addition, each municipality, if it deems it appropriate, may issue even more restrictive ordinances than the general ones for specific situations in which it is even more necessary to limit the risk of contagion.
The reactions. “Montespertoli has a contagion rate of 178 per 100,000 inhabitants, far from the 250 limit triggered by the red zone. However, as of Monday, by decision of the regional authorities, he will go into lockdown, apparently due to pressure on the Empoli hospital. The inhabitants of Montespertoli, who among other things make use of Florentine hospital services and not those of Empoli, did not deserve the red zone, which will result in the closure of schools and many commercial activities. They did not deserve it because, by respecting the regulations, they had managed to keep the contagion rate low in our territory but despite this they will suffer very strong economic and social repercussions ”. Thus, the leader of the group Niccolò Macallè and the municipal councilors of Progetto Montespertoli Andrea Migliorini, Margherita Sergi, Carlo Guiducci and Luciana Morelli.
“Now the region, one of the few in Italy that has not yet launched an aid plan to support all business activities, is finding the necessary resources to reimburse the losses to the affected companies. Because the responsibility for the closures is not in the behavior of the citizens but in the deficiencies of the regional health system that in a year has not been able to organize and respond adequately to the pandemic ”, the councilors conclude.
