Coronavirus, the prosecutor investigates the lack of follow-up of positive patients of the Reggio Calabria ASP

Something went wrong at the Provincial Health Authority of Reggio calabria in the management of the Covid emergency. In fact, the Public Ministry has opened an investigation into the failure patient monitoring positive for Covid by the provincial health authority. The survey for now is only cognitive and is in the early stages. This is a file that was opened about a month ago by the prosecutor Giovanni bombardieri and by the deputy Gerardo Dominijanni who delegated the carabinieri to carry out the necessary controls at the offices of Palazzo Tibi, headquarters of the ASP of Reggio Calabria.

The investigation started last October also refers to the delays in carrying out the tampons and dissemination of results. At the moment there is no one registered in the suspect register but the magistrates are trying to verify why many positive asymptomatic patients and in quarantine in fact, they were abandoned in their homes without any communication or assistance from the health authority. In other words, the suspicion is that, in the province of Reggio Calabria, many of the patients in isolation have not been guaranteed the necessary assistance to manage the quarantine period. According to the hypotheses of the researchers, in fact, almost everyone had a telephone number that, however, rarely answered someone, so it was almost impossible for patients to speak to health personnel and receive the necessary information .

The prosecutor’s suspicion is that this situation was caused by a chronic understaffing in the Hygiene and Public Health Unit of the Asp. To face the Covid-19 emergency, the needs of the Unit must be approximately 60 employees, including doctors and nurses. In reality, the company’s Prevention Department, led by the prefectural commissioners after the dissolution due to mafia infiltration, has only 14 health workers with a huge amount of work if you think that, according to today’s data provided by the Region, only in the province of Reggio. A figure that grew exponentially if we take into account that a month ago, on October 6 (on the days the investigation was opened), 129 positives were recorded in isolation. In the first weeks of the pandemic, last March, the hiring was authorized, which, however, remained only on paper. Carabinieri and pm, now, they are checking why the competition process, called to face the extraordinary moment of emergency, has been interrupted. Interestingly, the selection of doctors and health workers has been restarted in recent weeks, only after the Reggio Calabria Prosecutor’s Office began to question some ASP employees.
