Coronavirus, the curve is reversed: new cases fall for the first time after 20 weeks

For the first time after 20 weeks, the data of the new infected in Italy falls. Between November 18 and yesterday there were 216,966 cases in Italy, against 242,620 in the previous seven days, in one of which, on November 13, the record of new diagnoses since the beginning of the epidemic was reached: 40,902. This is a decrease of 10.5%. For days it was seen that the curve changed direction and also the data of the RT, the replication factor, detected by the control room of the Higher Institute of Health and Ministry were down in all the Regions. In the previous weeks the cases had been, in order, 235,660, 195,068, 130,344, 68,988, 35,208.

The decline concerns practically all the Regions. Some small Regions are exceptions such as Basilicata which went from 1,496 to 1,514 cases, Friuli (from 4,399 to 5,660), Sardinia (from 3,019 to 3,192), Calabria (from 2,753 to 3,454), Molise (from 686 to 803). The only important reality in which this trend can be observed is Puglia, which nevertheless increased slightly, that is, from 9,040 to 9,338. Then there are the stable ones, such as Emilia, which went from 17,439 cases to 17,300, or Lazio (from 18,644 to 18,271) and Veneto (from 21,711 to 21,450). The decline was most marked in Campania (from 25,530 to 21,910), Piedmont (from 27,233 to 21,828), Tuscany (from 16,784 to 12,793) and Lombardy (from 58,170 to 48,429)

The percentage of positives decreases

The percentage of positives with respect to the swabs performed also decreases. The week that just ended was 14.59% compared to 16.18%, with a series of tests that for the first time in many weeks (in this case 10) fell, even slightly. The figure is 1,486,673 compared to 1,499,311 the week before. It should be remembered that these numbers do not take into account antigenic quick swabs, which are being used more and more.

The increase in hospitalizations slows, almost 5 thousand deaths in a week

Total hospitalizations continue to grow (internists and intensive care rooms) but there is a slowdown. Yesterday there were 38,393 Covid patients in hospitals against 36,686 on Tuesday, November 17. This is 4.6% more, according to Civil Protection data reviewed by Giorgio Presicce, an analyst for the Tuscany Region. Last week the increase was 16.1% and the previous one 33.5%. Even in hospitals, the pressure, which in any case exceeded the maximum of the first wave, seems destined to diminish, after the decline in cases a few days later.

Covid, Rezza: “It is a painful subject but moving and meeting at Christmas are very risky for the circulation of the virus”

Yesterday there were 3,816 people in intensive care, 5.6% more than the previous Tuesday. Also in this case, the percentage of increase is lower than in recent weeks: 21.5, 33.5 and 57.8%.

Yesterday the deaths reached 51,306, the previous Tuesday they were 46,464. Thus, throughout the week there were 4,842, or 691 per day. The increase was 10.4%. The previous week had been 4,136, 41.8% more and before the increase had been 71%. Also in this case, a deceleration is observed, but the effect of the decrease in the contagion curve is observed in deaths many days apart, given that on average 12 days elapse between the positive swab and death.
