France registered 10,593 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The day before, 9,784 cases had been detected. There are also 50 other deaths related to Covid-19, for a total of 31,095 victims.
Although the Old Continent registers new and worrying increases in Covid-19 infections, simultaneously with the reopening of schools and as the cold months approach, The European director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Hans Kluge warns of the desire to “relax”. In particular, he recommended that governments not reduce the 14-day quarantine period for those potentially exposed to the coronavirus, while admitting the complex context of growing resistance and public fatigue. “Even a slight reduction in quarantine” could have a serious effect on the spread of the disease, “he said, while the WHO confirmed that 300,000 new infections were confirmed in the 53 countries of the region in the last week. In addition, in more than half of the cases in two weeks the increase was more than 10%, data that, according to Kluge, should “be a wake-up call for everyone.” The virus “is ruthless, when prejudice and misinformation prevail,” he added.
Last week, France reduced the quarantine for potential infected from 14 to seven days, saying that, in any case, many people did not respect the entire period. However, the WHO notes that those two weeks are recommended based on scientific data on the incubation period and transmission trends. Several countries, WHO predicts, think they are mimicking France, but the organization strongly advises against it. Kluge spoke with the mask on, while in previous press conferences the leaders of the WHO did not usually use it: it is not by chance, but “a clear sign: the situation will get worse.” Meanwhile, the British government is also dealing with a number of new cases never registered since May (Wednesday +3,991) and has imposed new restrictions in the northeast of England.
And even in Spain the situation is critical: today there have been 11,291 infected and 162 deaths. There are 10,003 people hospitalized, of which 1,331 are in intensive care. The Madrid authorities will announce new measures tomorrow Friday to “limit mobility and reduce activities” in areas where “there has been an increase in the transmission of the virus.” The Community of Madrid has registered 598 cases of contagion per 100,000 inhabitants (673 in the capital area) and 21,991 new infections in the last 14 days.
