Franco Locatelli sets the threshold compatible with a relaxation of anti-contagion measures at “6-7 thousand cases” per day of Covid-19. In an interview with the newspaper The impression, the president of the Higher Health Council invites you to live this Christmas in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic with extreme caution. If risky behaviors are not adopted, he says, “we can move on to a series of infections that will allow the transition from a containment phase to a mitigation phase.”
In a mitigation phase, along with the closure of the pandemic, measures against contagion would also be relaxed. But not before 2021, despite the curve showing a decline for a couple of weeks. “The system of differentiated measures in relation to risk levels has worked – says Locatelli -. Now it depends on how we behave. If we spend the holidays in an absolutely responsible way, in three or four weeks we could go down to 6-7 thousand boxes a day.
This daily number of new infections would allow “tracing of contacts, helping to prevent the uncontrolled spread of the virus. But this year we have to forget about the big Christmas tables, the festivities in the square and the end of the year concerts », reiterates the professor. And it invites to spend the holidays «with the dearest affection in an absolutely limited number of people. We owe it to ourselves, to loved ones and to the memory of those who are gone.
Mandatory isolation for those who are going to ski abroad
Locatelli then intervened on the subject of ski resorts: “Austria is part of the EU and it would be surprising if it did not accept the invitation of Merkel and even our government to keep the facilities closed. Switzerland is not in the EU but, given the low number of its infections, a contrary choice would disappoint me. If not, I personally say that it is reasonable to anticipate a period of fiduciary isolation when Italians return home to defend the community.
“School? One of the safest places”
Speaking of the measures that the government is studying, the president of the Higher Health Council considers it reasonable to extend the opening of shops until 10 pm, which “would serve to dilute the presence in commercial establishments.” About school, then, he says that it is “one of the safest places and its contribution to the growth of the epidemic curve is absolutely marginal. It is on the dangers of outdoor meetings and on the means of transport where it is necessary to intervene, promoting the latter and differentiating entry times. But as soon as we bend the contagion curve a little more, even the upper ones will reopen.
At least 70% of Italians must be vaccinated
Much of the interview is devoted to the topic of vaccines. Locatelli speaks of “the most impressive vaccination campaign in history”, arguing that “70% of Italians, therefore more than 40 million, will have to be vaccinated, starting with those who are most exposed to professional and individual risks, like RSA medical staff and guests. ” . The professor does not rule out that after the announcement of a complement to the research, the AstraZeneca vaccine may suffer “an extension of the approval times” to verify its greater efficacy at a reduced dose.
