India towards 4 million infections

India recorded a daily increase of 83,341 coronavirus infections, bringing its count to 3.94 million, the Health Ministry reports. At this rate, the Asian country is approaching Brazil as the second nation most affected by the virus.
According to a Reuters tally, the worst-hit country in Asia is now only about 60,000 cases behind Brazil, which has around 4 million confirmed cases. The United States is the most affected country, with more than 6 million cases.

India has recorded the highest number of daily cases in the world for nearly a month, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government pushes to open up the economy to avoid further damage from the pandemic. The Indian economy fared worst in the April-June quarter among the world’s major economies as the pandemic crippled businesses and forced India’s 1.3 billion people to stay home for the most part. However, deaths in India from COVID-19 remained relatively low. The ministry said 1,096 people have died from the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 68,472 since the start of the pandemic.
