Italy exceeds 50,000 Covid deaths. An impressive number reached today with another 630 victims. A silent massacre that took place in a ten-month pandemic.

In the first wave, mortality was 13%, today it is 3.7%. Since lethality is the ratio of deaths to positives, it is greatly affected by the number of tampons, which in Italy have increased tenfold in Italy since spring.

The death rate in Italy is still high compared to countries like Germany (1.6%) and Denmark (1.2%).

Iss data

The average age of the deceased is 80 years, according to data collected by the Higher Institute of Health. In particular, with regard to age groups, 41.1% of deaths correspond to people between 80 and 89 years old, 25.5% to those between 70 and 79 years old, 18.8% to those older than 90 years, 9.8% between 60 and 69, 3.5% between 50 and 59. Under 49 years, deaths represent slightly more than 1% of the total.

Numbers that reflect the creaking of hospitals. One in ten positive people needs hospitalization. One in ten admitted patients is admitted to intensive care. Unfortunately, one in three intensive care patients cannot attend. And today, in those departments, we have 3,810 people in Italy. During the spring peak, the average age dropped to 78 years. By mid-July it had risen to 85 and today it is just below 80 again.

Regarding sex, men are the most affected while women account for 42.5% of all people who have lost their lives due to the Coronavirus.

Pre-existing pathologies, a strong risk factor

The Higher Institute of Health studied, in a sample of cases, how many pre-existing pathologies affected people who later died. The average number of diseases is 3.5. Only 3.3% of the patients did not even have one, while almost 65% had three or more. The most commonly observed were hypertension, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation, dementia, kidney failure, etc.

Carlo Signorelli, professor of hygiene and public health at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, explained a few days ago to Republic that “they are usually cases with three pathologies. Even more than age, the presence of other diseases is a risk factor for Covid.” And if Italy is worse than other European nations, it is also because of its demographic structure. “Those over 70 in our country are 17%, while the European average is 10%. In Catalonia and London it is 9%.”

As for the symptoms observed before admission of the people who died later, the most frequent are fever, then dyspnea and cough. 8% of the people did not present any symptoms at the time of admission. Usually when things are destined to go wrong for a patient, it soon becomes apparent. In fact, an average of 12 days elapse from the onset of symptoms to death, of which five between symptoms and hospitalization and seven in hospital.
