A few days after returning to school and the start of the new school year after the long stop after the national shutdown, I’m already more than 400 Italian schools where it was registered at least one case of coronavirus infection and more than seventy institutions are temporarily closed for this reason. This is what emerges from a map of contagions in the school prepared by a young researcher and university student, Vittorio Nicoletta and Lorenzo Ruffino, collecting data from press reports and the ordinances of the mayors both with a view to the reopening of the school as during the first days of frontal lessons.
More than 480 schools that would have had at least one confirmed case of coronavirus
In detail, according to data collected by two academics, so far there are more than 480 schools that have had at least one confirmed case of coronavirus either among students or among teachers and school staff. Would be in your place more than fifty outbreaks recorded in the classroom, that is, cases in which, prior to the identification and isolation of those involved, there were two or more related cases. After the national contagion data, Lombardy is at the top of the ranking of affected schools, followed by Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Lazio. Only in Basilicata so far there have been no cases at school.
Two-thirds of those infected at school are students
Some cases of contagion were found before the reopening of September 14 during the phase of control of teachers and school personnel through tests but most of the positives were identified after the first days of class, that is, in the ten days from September 14 to September 24. A fact that goes hand in hand with that of the subjects involved who in fact for two thirds it is represented by students. Only 13% of infections affect teachers and the rest other staff. The schools most involved are secondary schools, closely followed by elementary schools, then kindergartens and middle schools. However, only in about 70 cases was it necessary to close the entire building to carry out disinfection.
Swab and medical certificate to return to class
In order to increase the safety of students and teachers and prevent possible outbreaks, today the Minister of Health has issued a new circular that requires swab and medical certificate to return to class after absence with Covid symptoms. In case of suspicion, doctors or pediatricians should immediately request the swab, so much so that the circular emphasizes that school operators and students have priority in carrying out the tests.
