The curve rises and the figures are those of April, but despite the alarms and the cases that are clearly increasing, the coronavirus epidemic in Sicily it is still quite far from the figures that could put the regional health system in serious difficulty. Which is the most important of all, as experts have been telling us for months.
It is about perception, about sensations of something that in the last year has definitely upset the life of each one of us, about thoughts that inevitably lead us to think in a way that is not only optimistic, but also lucid.
In all this, controversies are not necessary but they are on the agenda. Health Councilor Ruggero Razza repeated yesterday figures and figures that the Sicilian Diary wrote exactly a week ago when we reported that yes, the number of new cases is close to April, but it is the epidemic itself that changes, since before the average age of patients was 60 years and over, now it has dropped to 30 .
Intensive care data, for example. In the last few days the message has passed, first of all from the unions to tell the truth, that the intensive care units were full to the point of exploding, with departments that could no longer accommodate patients. The numbers, however, at least suggest that the saturation level is still far from being reached.
Opposite of 501 new cases (compared to 412 the previous week), from Saturday, September 5 to yesterday, there were 6 patients who needed respiratory assistance (in Sicily there are already 18 in total) while those hospitalized in the ordinary regime increased by 28 units (116 in total ). So 36 in total, but 97 have been cured in the last week, almost triple: not a marginal detail. The number of people in home isolation has increased considerably (+370).
They are numbers from the end of March / beginning of April, just, let’s remember, the hospitalized were more than 600 and more than 120 people ended up in intensive care. If now some room is full it is mainly because practically all the structures of the “Covid Hospital” built in the middle of the pandemic have been closed, but as Councilor Razza said, there is already a plan, in case the epidemiological curve and hospitalizations should increase, to strengthen the entire system.
Of course, there is the case of Palermo.. Do not underestimate. Especially since infections in the capital have really increased a lot, especially in recent weeks, where 10 times in 14 days (and in the last 5 consecutive days) that of the Sicilian capital was the province with the most cases in history, and in the last month it has far surpassed even Catania. With many outbreaks to monitor, among other things, in the first place that of Rap, which already reaches 26 infections. It must be said, however, that since March until now there have been slightly less than 1000 cases in all of Palermo, but never like in this case, it is more than correct to say that caution is never too much.
