During the eight days of the national holiday, airline and hotel reservations across the country began to climb again. New cases have been practically eliminated thanks to localized closures and strict controls.

Chinese card payments giant China UnionPay saw its online payments increase by 9.6% during its first three days of vacation. According to data from Alibaba’s travel agency Fliggy, hotel bookings across the country have increased by more than 50% year-on-year, while airline and tourist site bookings have risen 16% year-on-year. “Every year, the cost of a week’s vacation is a carefully monitored barometer of the health of the country’s economy,” wrote the New York Times, noting that this year’s holiday offered “the clearest measure yet of China’s recovery from the pandemic.”

The desire to travel again is also derived from the security at the level of Covid infections: for about a month in the country there have been no new internal cases, only a few cases imported by citizens returning from abroad or foreign travelers. In addition, those who arrive in China must do a swab before embarking, one as soon as they land and then, in any case, spend 14 days of quarantine in the hotel, registering in an application. The government has also decided to impose selective and immediate closures in cities that saw an increase in cases with possible outbreaks, to limit new infections.

BEIJING, CHINA - OCTOBER 08: Chinese tourists walk in a shopping area on October 8, 2020 during the last day of the 'Golden Week' holiday in Beijing, China. Officials hope that the Golden Week holiday will boost China's consumer economy as people have been encouraged to use the 8-day break to travel and spend. Tourist sites, including the Great Wall, were crowded, with tickets sold out most days due to epidemic restrictions and capacity limited to 75%. An estimated 550 million people are said to be on the move, with crowded train stations and attractions providing a very different view of a country that was largely closed by the coronavirus outbreak earlier this year. Officially, the number of cases has remained low, although authorities are concerned about another wave of infection with the looming flu season. (Photo by Kevin Frayer / Getty Images)

If the daily figures published by Johns Hopkins University on Covid19 infections in the world are analyzed, as of October 9, 90,728 cases were registered in China, with 4,739 deaths. The government’s findings may not take into account the vast rural areas where millions of citizens live, but the numbers are certainly less worrisome than at the start of the pandemic. Even if the trail of possible new infections brought on by the golden week movement can only be counted in a few weeks.
