At what point is the epidemic?
«In the world it is still growing. In western Europe and, perhaps, in the United States, the number of infections begins to decrease, but elsewhere it increases exponentially: I think of Russia, many Latin American countries, nations such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh that had been saved since the first wave. Then there is Africa, where hitherto the impact has been limited. Covid-19 would add emergencies to emergencies. Malaria, tuberculosis, AIDS and Ebola are certainly not in quarantine. ”
And in Italy?
“The numbers are comforting, especially the rate of intensive care employment and the turnover between new and recovered cases, but they still don’t make us say that we are completely out of the acute phase.”
How are we going to win?
“With the vaccine, of course, I’m not so optimistic that we might be able to get there in no time. While waiting for the vaccine, efforts must be intensified to have valid therapeutic options. ”
Can we have a peaceful coexistence with the virus?
“Given the spread, we are now more than three million officially recognized cases worldwide, but the real ones are many more, coexistence is inevitable. The only weapons we have now are non-pharmacological, therefore, social distancing, hygiene hands, use of masks ».
Can you imagine the recovery of the curve?
Unfortunately, yes, even taking into account recent experiences in other countries. At the moment, in Italy, only 4-5% of the population, that is, around 2.6 million people, have “found” the virus. It means that around 56 million Italians remain “virgin territory” for Sars-CoV-2 ».
What about drugs?
“Several clinical trials are being carried out, many also in our country, with Spallanzani in the first row, but there is still no evidence of a decisive treatment. There are two lines of research: the first relates to antivirals, that is, drugs that can directly fight the virus and its replication in the body. The second is, instead, the administration of anti-inflammatory drugs used for other diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. In many cases of severe pneumonia caused by the virus, an excessive and potentially lethal immune response from the body to the pathogen has been observed, which it seeks to combat. “
What will the Italian 2020 holidays be like?
“They will be” spaced “vacations, but they are not said to be less beautiful: perhaps we will realize that crowding everyone in the same places was not so much fun. Italians are imaginative people, we will certainly find a way to have fun and relax ».
