The alarm was raised by the organization “Save the Children” in a new report entitled “Protect a generation”
Inequalities are increasing The study, based on a comprehensive global survey conducted in 37 countries of more than 25,000 children and adults, indicates, among other things, an increase in inequalities and the gender gap, as well as a doubling of domestic violence. This is a situation that also does not spare Italy, where by the end of the year one million more minors could fall into absolute poverty, double that of 2019.
Families that are already in a situation of pre-pandemic poverty are the most affected Worldwide, 3 out of 4 families have declared that they have lost part of their income, 2 out of 3 cannot adequately feed their children and 9 out of 10 cannot access medical care. Those most affected are households that were already in poverty before the pandemic: among them, 82% have suffered a decrease in income compared to 70% of non-poor families.
The consequences on the educational front The consequences also in the educational field are very serious, with 8 out of 10 children who, with the closure of schools, completely interrupted all forms of learning and only less than 1% of the poorest minors who have access to the Internet and distance education. And in Italy, one in 10 parents believe that they cannot afford to buy all the school books, and 2 in 10 fear that they will not be able to pay more for the cost of the school cafeteria.
Minors forced to work Girls and boys are increasingly exposed to the risk of violence, including in the home, and of being forced to go to work to help families: a condition that further increases gender gaps, making girls and women pay the highest price. girls, who with the pandemic have increasingly had to deal with household chores (in 63% of cases, compared to 43% of men), thus dropping out of school and risking having to marry prematurely often with men much older than them.
“Covid did not look anyone in the face” “This pandemic has not looked anyone in the face, it has not been stopped by the borders and has affected people and communities around the world, with serious consequences especially in the future of many children – said Daniela Fatarella, general director of Save the Children -. Covid has increased inequalities everywhere, in Italy, but even more so in fragile parts of the planet. We are not yet out of the risk to health, but among the priorities to start again, must be to protect children. We cannot risk them being left behind, otherwise we will all be left behind. “
