Unfortunately, there are more and more sites or even newspapers registered as such that would do anything even with a click. Even in Italy we know several.

Covid, the risk of fake news

The problem is, it’s often not just about revealing fake news, a trend already serious in itself, but one that is causing deep conceptual roots among readers, that is, ordinary people, which later becomes difficult, if not impossible, to eradicate.

This is the case of many of the news that circulated in recent months about the Coronavirus, which continues to gallop around the world. Finally, the very strong launched the July 13 in Saudi Arabia, and in many international newspapers, but almost nowhere in Italy.

A A one-and-a-half-year-old Saudi boy died from a broken tampon of Coronavirus inside his nasal cavity, after the medical staff of the hospital where he was found performed the Covid-19 test because he had a fever.

This is the harsh news, which the few Italian sites that have talked about it in recent days have immediately described it as a “child who died from a tampon”. This has raised many concerns, especially at a critical time like this, when infections in schools are on the rise and quick swabs have been decided.

In reality, put like this, the news tells only a partial truth, and misleading, and therefore full of very serious consequences. This is how things really were.

The truth about the story of the boy who died from a broken tampon

The boy’s uncle and legal guardian, Mosaed al-Joufan, explained that the nephew he did not suffer from chronic or dangerous diseases. A few days earlier, he began to complain of a high fever and was taken to Shaqra General Hospital. After being examined, the doctors decided to do a nasal swab, even though he was in good health.

The uncle said that the swab broke inside the child’s nasal cavity: just to remove it, the doctors decided put you under general anesthesia.

“At around one in the morning, they informed me that the operation was over and that the doctor was able to remove the tampon,” Al-Joufan said. Who added that, after his grandson woke up, he asked the specialist doctor to examine the child, checking his condition and making sure that the tampon was completely removed and there was no bleeding or difficulty breathing.

But the doctor was not there and they had to wait. At 9 am the little one lost consciousness and medical personnel discovered that he was no longer breathing. The x-ray showed that he had had a blockage of the airways in one of the lungs.

When the boy’s condition worsened, the relatives asked that he be transferred to a specialized hospital in Riyadh to save his life. The request was approved, but they remained in the hospital. waiting for an ambulance who made it to the emergency room just an hour later. But the little boy did not make it and died earlier.

A case of Medical negligenceTherefore, due to a medical error in the execution of the test and the subsequent accumulated delays, which have nothing to do directly with the nasopharyngeal swab performed to verify positivity for Coronavirus.
