Covid-19 slows down in Great Britain, but continues to grow in Spain and Germany and is of particular concern in France, where the authorities report an “exponential progression” of the virus in metropolitan areas and the president, Emmanuel Macron, does not rule out a new confinement. Meanwhile, Hungary has announced a new border closure, from September 1: stop the arrivals of foreign citizens, while for Hungarians returning from abroad a 14-day quarantine is mandatory, to avoid which they must present two test with negative results.
In France, there have been another 7,379 cases and 32 new outbreaks in the last 24 hours. Quite a significant jump from 6,111 on Thursday and 5,429 on Wednesday. After Paris, the obligation to wear masks was extended to other large cities such as Marseille, Strasbourg and Bordeaux. The mask will be compulsory from the age of 11 on Saturday and “at least until September 30” in Strasbourg and in all the municipalities of the department with more than 10,000 inhabitants.
The same measure came into force throughout Paris and in the three departments of the inner suburbs (Seine Saint Denis, Hauts de Seine, Val de Marne). Until now, wearing a mask was only required in some neighborhoods or on busy streets. “We are doing everything possible to avoid reconfiguration, but in theory nothing can be ruled out,” admitted President Macron. In the event of a scenario of violent resumption of the epidemic that once again disrupts the hospital system, “national or regional closures may be decided,” explained the head of the Elysee.
Spain registered another 3,829 in the last 24 hours, a figure slightly higher than the 3,781 yesterday. The National Medicines Agency has authorized the first clinical trial in the country of a vaccine: a product of the Janssen company, owned by the American multinational Johnson & Johnson, will be tested in 190 healthy volunteers between 18 and 55 years old and in another 400 in Germany and Holland.
In Germany there are still more than 1,500, specifically 1,571, a very slight increase compared to 1,507 the day before. Last Saturday the threshold of 2,000 new infections was exceeded for the first time since April. Britain halted the uptrend after two days, but the daily increase remains well above 1,000: 1,276 new infections, up from 1,500 the day before.
