103 guests and some operators of Mission and Hope and Charity of Biagio Conte are positive for the Coronavirus. And after yesterday morning the Region decreed the 4 centers managed by the Mission as red zones, this morning a face-to-face meeting was held at the Prefecture and by videoconference, convened by Prefect Giuseppe Forlani with all the institutional and associative subjects involved. in the health emergency situation determined in the Mission of Hope and Charity. In addition to the Prefect, the Mayor with Councilors Giuseppe Mattina and Maria Prestigiacomo, the Chief of Police and the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri, the Commander of the Municipal Police and the Fire Department, representatives of the same Mission, of the ASP, of Doctors without Borders, ARCI, Red Cross and municipal and regional Civil Protection.
First, the situation was made, which sees a total of about 450 people currently housed in the four structures, including volunteer workers and missionaries.
For everyone, the positive evaluation of Covid is underway, by ASp, however, is also complicated by the fact that some of the guests are people with previous mental and disabling pathologies.
Some symptomatic patients were transferred to health facilities and some non-symptomatic patients were transferred to the regional Covid-Hotel San Paolo. The structure that currently presents real logistical problems is that of via Decollati, in which there are a total of about 300 people.
In each structure, the ASP guaranteed the presence of a USCA (Unit of Continuity of Special Care) and since last night the Municipality has sent cultural mediators. Also the Municipality, in collaboration with Civil Protection and Cáritas, now ensures the supply of meals, as well as other primary and secondary goods.
It was decided to create a permanent health-logistics unit composed of ASP and the Municipality in each of the 4 localities, to which the health workers of Doctors Without Borders and cultural mediators will join.
The activity of the police, which is already present in the place 24 hours a day since yesterday, will be supported by cultural mediators, taking into account that the guests of the Mission, as well as Italians, are of various nationalities and cultures.
The medical staff of ASP and MsF have begun a control of the health status of elderly patients present in one of the structures, who may need hospitalization, even regardless of the current situation linked to Covid-19. The selection of all the guests will also continue at a rapid pace so that it is possible to identify the positives and negatives and thus be able to decide the next steps. At the same time, technical logistical possibilities are being identified to create separate areas within the Mission spaces that favor the maintenance of social distancing.
“In general – explains the mayor – a situation arose that was certainly not simple, determined by the large number of people who the Mission houses in its four centers; a number that is at the same time a sign of the importance that has been and has been the social work carried out in recent years by Brother Biagio and his many volunteers and missionaries. Delimitation as a “red zone” places the Mission spaces in the isolation conditions necessary as a guarantee for its guests and the rest of the city’s population. In the Prefecture, in a spirit of institutional collaboration but also of understanding of the difficulties experienced by the guests of the Mission, it was decided to give, according to priority health indications, the necessary assistance to the most fragile subjects, particularly those who need specialized care or living condition of mental anguish; both situations that are difficult to reconcile with a situation of limitation such as that of the Red Zone. At the same time – he concludes – we have equipped ourselves to face the best and provide assistance to the Mission, in what promises to be a difficult period ”.
Confirming the constant collaboration between all the institutions and realities affected and the attention devoted to the situation, the Prefect highlighted the need to consider the work table as permanent, calling a new meeting for tomorrow afternoon to monitor and plan the interventions.
