TRIESTE. The final ceremony of the EuroScience Open Forum in Trieste began shortly after 3:00 pm today, Sunday 6 September. To open the greetings was the Champion of the Esof 2020 Stefano Fantoni. Addressing Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Minister Stefano Patuanelli, to the other participants, he thanked all the institutional partners of the event, the local and national scientific institutions, the government and the local administration.
“I want to be frank: I never imagined that this would be such a complete experience for me, in these 5 days I have been on an emotional” roller coaster “, this place so full of potential has come to life, I am not Trieste but this city has been a part of my life for a long time: it was nice to see the old port animated from morning to night, I reflect on the power of ideas and on the ability of men to share ideas. Compared with other species, man has the social capacity to come together, Covid has shown that we must continue on this path in the name of sharing knowledge.
We regret not having many friends and colleagues here but we are starting over together in this which is the first major global scientific event of the Covid era, this splendid convention center is a tangible sign of our commitment but there is also an intangible heritage with many panels on sustainability and the needs of this and future generations, the extraordinary legacy of Esof 2020 is to create an international institute for sustainability, the importance of big data for artificial intelligence solutions on sustainable development, wanted us to be here regardless of everyone , in the name of passion for truth, in this age we need the truth and simple ways to express it, thank you Trieste, thank our country, thank Europe.
The news was passed to the governor of the Fvg Massimiliano Fedriga. “I am here again not to close Esof but to follow the path that this region and this city have undertaken and that we must also grow with the objective of employment and business.” Fedriga thanked Conte and Patuanelli for their presence: «I pointed out to the Prime Minister how important research and innovation are, I remembered that Trieste is the city with the largest number of researchers. Today the path must begin so that self-celebration becomes an opportunity for the country and Europe for all, but a communion of intentions is needed and that is why in the Porto Vecchio area we plan to launch the international institute of sustainability that can enter our research and training system.
Within the national funds there must be an involvement of the territories, we must unite and structure growth projects, we can identify common projects regardless of political affiliations, we have a moral duty to row on the same side, I have already become a “stalker” by President Conte for funds, Esof was an opportunity to put Trieste and our scientific world in the spotlight, but it would be a failure to stop here, we must see what will happen from tomorrow, the Fvg Region is available and believes in it , wants to move its institutions to the Old Port.
Third to take the floor for greetings Minister of Economic Development Patuanelli who began to address Prime Minister Conte: “Dear Giuseppe, welcome back to my beautiful city, a city of pollution, port and science, I ask you to help me to can bring and science can take advantage of opportunities that were not fully exploited in the past.We must forcefully demand non-customs law for full port development in which research can also play a fundamental role.
Trieste can become the center of the paths of sustainability that our activities will have to develop and the center of quantum technologies. There is a very interesting project that will have my full support and I am sure of the Prime Minister as well. Today concludes days that have brought the scientific debate with Trieste in the center, I am thinking about the different scientific institutions, but what matters is how scientific research becomes applied research and reaches companies and becomes economic development, we must ease all roads and contaminations together. , which lead companies to grow, strengthen, be competitive and stay in international markets, technology transfer must take place thanks to large supply chains that usually have the participation of the State.
I believe that public guidance – concluded the minister – is necessary and will not cease to have the support of the government, the digital innovation hub and the Enea Tech foundation are tools that we make available to companies and large research centers. If we all have the strength to work in this direction, events like Esof will not be a cathedral, Esof has returned to the city a piece of Porto Vecchio that has been waiting for years to become a motor ».
THE WORDS OF THE COUNT
There are four fundamental objectives, research priorities in Italy, identified by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, and expressed in his speech at the closing ceremony of Esof. According to the Prime Minister, it is necessary “to promote complex multidisciplinary integrated research, strengthen basic research, promote” mission-oriented “research, bring research closer to training.”
The premier had words of great gratitude for Trieste: “A unique model of international collaboration and scientific diplomacy, it was the perfect setting for this event and now it will be the ideal place to develop the scientific process that serves to reinvent the post-Covid world”
Regarding the relationship between science and politics and the management of the pandemic, Conte stopped at two aspects of science, “erroneously conceived in contradiction: the objectivity of scientific research and its being a field of confrontation, of dialectic exposing itself to the doubt”. .
For the premier, “this contradiction is illusory, but it can distort the meaning of the investigation in public opinion, which identifies doubt as an uncertainty” and not as a stimulating element. In this sense, “the assumption is that science is a human activity, therefore fallible, and the scientific philosophy of the twentieth century has taught us that the objectivity of science does not mean the absence of conflicts but that it is the result of resolved conflicts” . and win. “That is why” science is a democratic enterprise, even in epidemiological disciplines, and controversies should be taken as signs of rationality and not the other way around. “
Before the ceremony began, upon arrival, the premier briefly met with journalists: “There are all the conditions to build something destined to develop in the future. Trieste is the Italian city with the highest number of researchers compared to the number of inhabitants, he declared. Scientific centers of absolute international importance are concentrated here. So today is an important and symbolic moment also to launch this future perspective, we must work on technological innovation, on the most advanced technologies and Italian scientists are at the forefront of this ».
OTHER INTERVENTIONS
Massimo Inguscio, president of the National Research Council (CNR): “Research builds the future and will be a fundamental element for reconstruction. Quantum technologies represent a new cross-cutting paradigm, bringing together different fields to offer completely new opportunities in sectors ranging from the simulation of new drugs and materials with quantum computers, to autonomous systems and precision agriculture with quantum sensors. , to the secure transmission of data with quantum communication. The CNR, with its multidisciplinarity, has also assumed this challenge in a European way and implements strategies in synergy with other research institutions, the university world and companies to build a future based on knowledge and innovation ”.
Roberto di Lenarda, Rector of the University of Trieste: “Esof Trieste 2020 closes after 5 days full of multidisciplinary contributions that demonstrate once again the need for science to recognize the space and relevance that are its own and that are necessary for society and citizens. For this to happen, infrastructure, financial and organizational resources are needed. However, this must also necessarily be accompanied by a change of pace of scientists and institutions aimed at the creation of stable networks of transparent, strategic institutional collaborations and medium-long term. The University of Trieste is certainly committed now and for the future to this fundamental challenge for our city, our region, but also for the whole country. A sincere thanks to Professor Fantoni “.
Roberto Dipiazza, Mayor of Trieste: “Trieste has been able to welcome Esof2020 in the best possible way, it has highlighted and at the common service its scientific heritage, which is the heritage of the country and of the entire international scientific community. Trieste was delighted to host this event and today, more than passing the baton to the beautiful and important city of Leiden for the next edition of Esof, we are transferring a valuable baggage of new knowledge, so that this common heritage can continue to grow in its next equipment. Trieste, therefore, says goodbye to Leiden to continue working together ”.
Henri Lenferink, Windaco from Leiden: “The Trieste and Strasbourg organizations have done an incredible job adapting this exceptional conference to the current conditions imposed by Covid, thus showing their strength and resilience. I hope and believe that we will be able to learn from their excellent work and propose an equally exciting Esof in Leiden in July 2022. In 2022 Leiden will host the 10th edition of Esof. Of course, we will make sure to celebrate with all of you in the best way possible! Together with the EuroScience foundation and the European Commission in Brussels and Strasbourg we will face any effort to develop a new formula capable of facing future scenarios. But we will also propose another profound change: for the first time, Leiden will offer a one-year program to promote the reputation of the European Cities of Science. In doing so, we hope to leave a legacy and create a consortium of European Science Cities that looks to the future, from Trieste to Leiden and many others. ”
