CLIMATE: the winter cold is approaching, that’s when it will break into Italy

The weather outlook now leaves no room for doubt about the cold that will conquer Italy coinciding with the Christmas holidays. At this time all of Italy, as well as part of Europe, still enjoys the reflections of an anticyclonic promontory that guarantees a mostly stable and above all smooth weather.

However, signs of change are already evident, with the anticyclone begins to lose ground, eroded along the northern edge by the gradual push of a cavity associated with that block of cold air directed towards the Mediterranean.

The front of the Arctic irruption progressively descends from northern Europe to approach with great strides towards our Peninsula, within a niche that will penetrate the central Mediterranean, thus creating all the conditions to attract the cold air from the north.

Christmas Day will mark the moment when, from the early hours of the day, this cold air will cross the Alps and begin to spread towards the Central Mediterranean, causing a strong thermal drop from northern Italy, with a depression to be excavated in the central regions.

Dizzying temperatures

Italy will be squarely in the crosshairs of this onslaught of arctic currents that will bring back half of winter. The thermal drop will be substantial and above all sensitive, given the very temperate climate that precedes the expected cold outbreak.

In addition, the general strengthening of the winds, activated by the Mediterranean cyclogenesis, will help to enhance the perception of cold. All Italy will be affected by the Arctic whiplash, with temperatures dropping during Christmas throughout the Central-North and Sardinia.

On Boxing Day, the arctic currents will also conquer the south, sweeping away the softer air. The cold will not last long, as wetter currents will then arrive to drive a new disturbance that, however, will have the opportunity to bring snow even at low altitudes in northwestern Italy.
