Second Future, which is the newspaper of the Italian Episcopal Conference, the Vatican Secretariat of State would have invited the apostolic nuncios to share with the bishops of the states in which they perform a diplomatic function the note on the Pope’s words, which “have elicited, in the last days, various reactions and interpretations. ” The purpose of the note would be to offer “some useful elements, in the desire to favor, by its disposition (Pope Francis, ed), an adequate understanding of the words of the Holy Father.
The note recalls that “more than a year ago, when announcing an interview, Pope Francis answered two different questions at two different moments that in the documentary were published as a single answer, without the proper contextualization, which generated confusion” . Pope Francis “would first make a pastoral reference to the need that, within the family, the son or daughter with a homosexual orientation should never be discriminated against.”
The note specifies that Francisco would have responded to the first question with the words: “Gay people have the right to stay with their families; They are children of God, they have the right to a family. No one can be expelled from the family or make life miserable for it. A declaration, is specified, in line with thePost-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation to Love in the Amoris Laetitia Family of 2016, in paragraph no. 250.
The second question would instead refer to “an Argentine law from ten years ago on” equal marriages of same-sex couples “and the opposition of the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires in his comparisons.” The note, without going into the substance of the Pope’s response, recalls that in this case it would have referred to “the right of these people to have legal coverage”, saying verbatim: “What must be done is a law of civil coexistence; they have the right to be legally covered. I have defended this. “
Finally, the note refers to a 2014 interview in which Pope Francis had said: “Marriage is between a man and a woman. The States want to justify civil unions to regulate different situations of coexistence, driven by the need to regulate economic aspects between people, such as ensuring health care. These are coexistence agreements of various kinds, of which I cannot list the different forms. We need to see the different cases and evaluate them in their variety.
The Secretary of State concludes that “therefore, it is evident that Pope Francis has referred to certain state provisions, and certainly not to the doctrine of the Church, which has been repeated numerous times over the years.”
