Christmas Holidays: In recent days there has been a lot of talk in non-specialized newspapers about the “flight of the teachers” from the northern regions. The reason: the advance of a few days with respect to the end date of the classes, set by the school calendars from next December 23 or 24. Some of the teachers in question reportedly asked to return earlier, due to the confusion caused by the succession of standards and the fear that movement between regions could be problematic.
The school calendar region by region
In truth, the teacher who maintains his residence or domicile in his own region can also move on December 23 and 24, with no more restrictions than the mandatory sanitary restrictions provided by the region to which he returns (see for example Sicily)
Since the topic is not in itself health, let’s move on to the didactic side.
Students could “miss” two days of school
It would be necessary to verify case by case and then elaborate a statistic of how the absence of teachers can affect the educational trajectory. In elementary school, for example. It is possible that a “change” of schedule is already configured and therefore the activities are in fact the same as always. Just as it is possible that for those days activities related to Christmas were already planned and therefore a planning that goes beyond the normal “teaching”.
Not to mention the secondary schools, where it is customary to use the last day of class for the school assembly, which this year will be held remotely but not less important from the point of view of student rights.
Difficult to find substitutes
The problem, we do not hide it, exists. It is difficult to organize schedules in a short time, especially in those schools where the number of itinerant teachers is high.
Teachers return to their loved ones
However, in our opinion, another aspect should also be highlighted. Teachers return to their loved ones after months of intense school activity, with great stress due to the conditions in which it took place this year. Months in which the didactic objectives have not failed, but have been rethought and adapted to new needs, in which teachers and professors have spent the best of themselves in situations that are often short-circuited. Months in which the spectrum of the “covid room” was associated with the commitment to teaching activity. Months in which every gesture in the classroom has been conceived, studied, calibrated, every activity to be proposed, every way of doing it.
Teachers do not run away from their duties, but instead return home to embrace their loved ones again. And perhaps the concentration of requests for permits and permissions should point more to the confusion generated by “what can I” and “what I can not do” than to want to evade the duties.
The opinion of school principals
We would like to know the opinion of the directors of schools of [email protected]
A testimony is reported today by Repubblica “From tomorrow we will go to war”, says a manager “On December 23 we will leave at 12.30, four hours before, but I had to say no to the dozens of vacation requests, the lessons must be guaranteed “
How many schools are in the same condition? And is the “hassle” of having to reschedule two-day activities really a “war”?
