Giacomo, a baby born in September 2016, ended up in the operating room immediately after giving birth. Since then, according to the newspaper La Repubblica, a series of complications began that eventually led to child to die at two years. Currently, for the matter, they are under investigation by homicide of eight doctors of the Bambino Gesù hospital, a hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in which the judge will order an expert opinion to know in detail what happened. Prosecutor Daniela Cento wants to shed some light because she believes that there could be specific criminal responsibilities towards doctors.
In 2016 Giacomo was born in Taormina with a heart problem. That is why he was immediately operated on at the Mediterranean pediatric cardiology center of the Bambino Gesù Hospital in San Vincenzo. The three health workers who carried out the intervention – according to the prosecutor – would make a very serious mistake: they put the pacemaker in reverse, looking down.
This would have led to “a kind of loop that contracts his pulmonary artery”, writes Repubblica, and that causes him “acute cardiocirculatory failure.” The child’s family cannot know anything. As he grows, however, Giacomo worsens because “the rope is tightening more and more.”

They schedule it a few days later, but put it off because the baby has an infection.
Around Christmas, another visit from Giacomo: “the boy is sent home despite his mother’s insistence.” the December 31, 2018 the child is in very serious condition. Transported by military plane to the capital, it was operated on the next day. The two doctors who perform the surgery, according to the prosecution, not only do it “in macroscopic delay”, but they would be wrong about the procedure.
L‘January 1, 2019 the little one dies. For the prosecutor, each of the doctors who treated him worked with “negligence, recklessness and inexperience” and contributed “to causing the death of the child.”
“The process will not serve to alleviate the pain of those who loved little Giacomo but it will be necessary to find out responsibility preventing similar tragedies from happening in the future, ”says Giacomo’s family lawyer, Domenico Naccari.
