The other patients became suspicious and alerted the nurses: that man did not come back from the bathroom, it had been a long time, perhaps he could have had an illness. A health worker made his way through the forest of stretchers that packed the “Cardarelli” emergency room, opened the bathroom door and made the tragic discovery: the person was on the floor. Devoid of life The other patients are upset and so are the staff, so while the nurses fetch a stretcher to remove the body, someone grabs a mobile phone and records a shocking video.
The images show the body on the ground, a fixed needle bandage is seen on the arm (what is needed for intravenous therapies), the gaze appears contracted in the deadly spasm, the eyes open. Whoever takes the scene explains aloud what he sees: “We are in the emergency room of Cardarelli.” Then he frames the other patients, the stretchers piled up, he approaches an old man who does not seem well. The comment is too crude to report. The setting is from Dante’s circle. Terrible images that, however, fully convey the seriousness of the situation.
While waiting to understand what happened, the cause of the man’s death, it is clear what is happening: the emergency room of the largest hospital in the South is overwhelmed by the emergency.
And when the video begins to circulate, the hospital management tries to run for cover. First with condolences to the families of the deceased, then with a demonstration of closeness to the staff “who dedicate every day to curbing the violence of this pandemic.” But not only: “It is deplorable – says General Director Giuseppe Longo – that similar events are exploited to build terrible and dangerous suggestions in public opinion.”
