Rome, December 4, 2020 – It is a photograph of‘Italy in the moment of COVID-19 with a thousand facets, the one that comes out of 54th Censis report “The Italian Society until 2020” published today. The image of an Italy that substantially approves of the squeeze decided by the government in view of the holiday season. A country in which the pandemic of Coronavirus increased the gap between rich and poor (billionaires are growing) and where only 23% of the self-employed have the same pre-Covid income level. A country where distance education widened the gap between students. A country where fear and anxiety They are the feelings of this year lived with the sword of Damocles of the pandemic. A country where they are made less and less children. Then there is a surprise: almost one in two Italians are in favor of the death penalty. This and much more.

Covid and Christmas

Italians are in favor of “closure”, by “Bell”, during the holidays. With a view to Christmas and New Year’s Eve, according to the Censis Report on the country’s social situation, 79.8% of Italians ask don’t loosen the restrictions or to exacerbate them. 54.6% will spend less on gifts to put under the tree, 59.6% will cut expenses for New Year’s Eve dinner. This time, for 61.6% of Italians, the New Year’s party will be sad and resigned. And pessimism prevails, “not everything will turn out well”: 44.8% of Italians are convinced that we will emerge worse from the pandemic. Only 20.5% believe that this experience will make us better.

Fear and anxiety

73.4% of Italians indicate in the fear of the unknown and in anxiety consequently, the prevailing sentiment since the pandemic began. The state is a lifeline. “57.8% of Italians are willing to argive up personal freedoms in the name of the protection of collective health, leaving to the Government the decisions about when and how to leave home, about what is authorized and what is not, about the people who can be cared for, about the limitations on personal mobility.

Wealth and poor

The gap between rich and poor is widening. If, on the one hand, from March to September 2020, “there are 582,485 more people living in families that receive a citizenship scholarship (+ 22.8%),” on the other, 1,496,000 people (3% of adults) have wealth that exceeds a million dollars (about 840,000 euros): of these, 40 are billionaires and have increased both in number and assets during the first wave of the epidemic.

Distance education

It was one of the most discussed experiments in recent months. Distance learning does not seem to have worked properly. According to the report, in fact, “for 74.8% of managers, distance education has increased the learning gap between students” even if “95.9% strongly or fairly agree that Dad was a useful experiment for teaching. “

The play: the two Italians

“For 85.8% of Italians, the health crisis has confirmed that the true social division that exists among workers is that between those with job security and income and those without.” Censis then speaks of the “universe of the disappeared, that of small jobs in services and undeclared work, estimated at about 5 million people who ended up sinking without making a sound ”.

Fewer and fewer children

“In 2019 I born in italy they were 420,170: 148,687 less than in 2009, 26.1% less. Italians have fewer and fewer children. The result is a winter
demographic that is progressively shrinking the country. “The risk is a generation of zero children.

Death penalty

Death penalty: “surprisingly – the dossier reads – almost half of Italians (43.7%) are in favor of its introduction into our system (and the figure rises to 44.7% among young people)”.

The role of the web

The report estimates that “almost 43 million people of age (including at least 3 million newbies) have kept in touch with their friends and family thanks to video calling systems that use the Internet.”
