His condition had worsened for some time, a particularly aggressive neuroblastoma did not let him out. Matteo Pisani de Cavernago passed away on Monday, September 7: he was only 11 years old. He fought like a lion as long as his strength allowed him. At his side, for four years, were the father Domenico, 56, and the mother Francesca Lozza, 47, and the brothers Alessandro and Gabriella.

It was 2016 when, from some analyzes, the presence of a neuroblastoma had emerged. A surprising result that has upset the existence of Matteo and his family who have been dragged into a maelstrom of hospitals, exams and expensive treatments. “We visited several hospitals – says his father – including those in Bergamo, Pavia and even Rome where we have always found excellent doctors, who have done everything possible but, unfortunately, they found themselves in front of a wall”.

Over time, the disease worsened and Matteo had lost the use of his legs for over a year. «From a very young age – continues Domenico – my son tried his luck in various sports such as swimming, skiing and, when we went to the sea in Liguria, fishing. Not to mention climbing up to 20 meters high. I still remember when, after Cre, he followed me on his bike while I was out for a run. Then, unfortunately, the disease got worse and Matteo could no longer walk.

He had a dream: to follow in the footsteps of his father, who is a firefighter. The devotion for that uniform was immense. “He was a lively, active child and always present until the last moment.”

Around the pain of Domenico and Francesca, and of the 29-year-old siblings Alessandro and Gabriella, 15, the entire Cavernago community has tensed, still in shock at the news of the death of the 11-year-old boy with an always good smile imprinted on his face. “I thank – concludes Domenico – all the colleagues who have been close to me and the entire Cavernago community, the mayor and parish priest.”
