Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s massive patch size annoys gamers

Since its release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has steadily grown in size thanks to its frequent and big updates. Following this week’s latest patch and additional DLC content, Modern Warfare’s file size is now close to 200GB on any platform, and these updates are necessary to continue playing online. They also mean that even those who buy a new physical copy will have to wait a substantial period before they can actually play.

Modern Warfare for PC currently takes up around 180 GB of hard drive space, while reaching 185 GB on PS4 and Xbox One. This follows two patches that were released on April 28. On the PC, these were combined into a single 32GB download, while being split into a 12GB title update and an additional 18GB DLC download on consoles. Warzone gamers on the console could skip the latter of the two, reducing the overall download requirement and file size.

Downloading big updates has become normal for Modern Warfare players, so much so that developer Infinity Ward specifically addressed it in February. During the run-up to Season 2, Infinity Ward emphasized that the large update size at the time (over 50GB) would help reduce update sizes in the future, while also improving the overall footprint of the game in your hard drive. While 32GB is smaller, the increasing size of the game is concerning, especially as it is closer to 50% of the total internal capacity of the PS4 and Xbox One S.

Prior to the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward shared the PC requirements for the shooter, which included a recommended 175GB hard drive partition. At the time, Infinity Ward explained that this was to ensure that future content updates had room to exist, but that estimate has already been exceeded after this week’s patch.

It is causing a lot of frustration on the part of the players, especially when Infinity Ward is not clear why the game requires more and more space on consoles and PC.
