Antonino Spirlì, the interim president of Calabria, said Thursday evening, in a video posted on Facebook, that Calabria’s regional elections scheduled for February 14 will be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Spirlì – who in recent weeks had assured that he would vote in February – said that the new date will be announced shortly and added: «The truth is that we are not going to vote on February 14. We are not foolish enough to send Calabrians to vote with the R indext that went from 0.64 to almost 2 and with twice the number of infections in two days ”. Actually, according to the latest available data, in Calabria the Rt (useful to measure how much the virus is transmitted) is however 1.09; not 1.9 (and therefore “almost 2”, as Spirlì said).
New elections in Calabria became necessary after the death, in October, of Jole Santelli, who had been elected president of the region in February 2020.
