Calabria becomes the “orange zone”, but then the health problem was not the inefficient structures? The paradox that unmasks the great deception perpetuated by the government
Calabria wakes up in the orange zone after three weeks in “Red zone“By”structural deficiencies of Calabrian health“: An election that exposed the great deception perpetuated against the poorest and southern Region of the South. An election that is obviously welcomed with relief, but that has displaced everyone: from merchants to citizens to the acting president Spirlì, convinced that at least until December 3 nothing would change. They followed the logic indicated by the Government: “Calabria’s problem is not the numbers of the pandemic, but the structural and hospital deficiencies.“Everybody wrote about it a little, even abroad in the international media: despite an incidence rate among the lowest in Europe, a very low number of cases and a very low number of hospitalizations, Calabria was a “red zone”. For the “poor organization of hospitals and lack of beds“Or so they said. Despite the hospitals were empty (except the 3 centers of Reggio, Cosenza and Catanzaro, inexplicably abandoned alone to house Covid positive patients each of their entire province, without involving the many other hospitals as they do in all regions) and the doctors said there was no reason to declare the red zone.
But assuming, and not granted, that this was indeed the case, we wonder what has changed in these three weeks. Have we solved all Calabrian healthcare problems? We have increased the number of beds? We have contracted doctors and nurses? There is no evidence. Only in the GOM of Reggio, with the hospital resources relocated thanks to the brilliant guidance of the curator Iole Fantozzi, the capacity of intensive care has increased, but fortunately it has not yet been used to cope with the pandemic. Although Riuniti is the only hospital that has received Covid-positive in the entire province of Reggio Calabria (560,000 inhabitants), there have never been more than 11 patients admitted simultaneously to intensive care. Eleven patients of 560 thousand residents.
The numbers are very limited: in Sicily, in Liguria, in Lazio, in Veneto and in Sardinia, all yellow areas, the hospital and epidemiological situation is much more serious than in Calabria. Here because orange is also exaggerated compared to the epidemiological and hospital situation in Calabria. Calabria should be yellow, maybe even green, the only green zone in Italy because it is the only Region that has such low numbers and such low hospital pressure.
But the point now is not so much orange, yellow or green. The real point is red. Why was Calabria declared a “red zone” three weeks ago? Today’s sanitary facilities are the same as before. So this hypothesis does not hold. It was just an excuse, which many Calabrians believed biting the bait like fools and began to retaliate, waging a war against who to blame regarding medical malpractice. Despite being commissioned and in the hands of central governments for more than 10 years. But there is more.
Today, although it remains even more contained, the situation is much more serious than when the red zone was declared. In fact, on November 6 there were hardly any in Calabria 227 patients admitted to hospitals in Calabria, of which only 15 in intensive care units. New daily cases fluctuated around 250. Today, however, the situation is different: in the Region there are 450-500 new cases per day, exactly double what it was three weeks ago; the hospitalized are 476, again more than double compared to the day of the “red zone”. Of these, 44 are in intensive care: exactly three times on the day of the red zone declaration. The numbers are very small, the intensive care beds available in Calabria are more than 180 and the intensive care occupancy rate is around 24%, the lowest in Italy. But three weeks ago it was8%, much lower than today. However, the “red zone” was declared. Why? Why, if today with worse figures we can be oranges?
It is evident that these criteria are a big bet, masking political options. Furthermore, in these three weeks, despite the restrictions of the “red zone”, the epidemiological and hospital situation in Calabria has drastically worsened. The number of new cases has doubled, the number of hospitalizations has more than doubled, it has even tripled for those in intensive care. So what are restrictive measures for? If there is a curfew, closed schools, clubs and shops, mobility restrictions, etc. the contagion has increased, What do we do to make these sacrifices?
Science continues to produce research that shows how Coronavirus is a seasonal infection: it means that only from March the situation will improve, without vaccines that, if they arrive, will be able to help us sooner. Certainly not by contrasting the spread of infection, about which there is little to do. Regarding the protection of the elderly and the most fragile segments of the population, which are the only ones who have serious consequences due to this virus. We will all get that sooner or later. Is that in 96% of cases it is exactly like a trivial flu. A percentage that rises to 99.99% among healthy children, youth, adults and even the elderly, that is, without other serious concomitant pathologies. As with all other seasonal influenza viruses, every year during the peak of the flu they cause critical situations in hospital wards, is that only thanks to the vaccine they do not cause mortality figures as high as those of Covid-19.
Meanwhile, however, the dilemma remains: Why has Calabria been declared a “red zone”? And who will compensate the Calabrians for the enormous economic, social and moral losses of these three weeks of confinement and, above all, for the mockery of such dramatic and international damage to the Region? A colossal damage that one cannot remain to accept in silence, especially now that the great deception has been revealed. The first to request the bill should be the local administrators and all the institutional representatives of Calabria at the different levels (municipalities, region, parliament). Whoever does it will undertake one battle for justice. And will have the Calabrian village.
Covid, the Calabrian paradox: it is an orange zone with twice the number of cases and three times more hospitalized than when it became the red zone
