An expectation full of apprehension. This is what Calabria is experiencing, at all levels, suspended by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s Dpcm, who has not yet seen the light and the meeting of the Scientific Technical Committee that must analyze the data on the spread of the pandemic and the impact on regional health system. A crossroads from where the answer to the question feared by all will come, from the acting president of the Region, Antonino Spirli ‘,
common citizen: Will the “red zone” be activated for Calabria?
A considered perspective probable until this morning but with “old” data from a week. Therefore, the CTS meeting will be decisive. Meanwhile, in Calabria, where health has been commissioned by the government for years, the number of infections is increasing at a rate that has never been seen even in the first phase of the pandemic. Today the new positive results were 266 – new record since last March – with 2,855 subjects evaluated and there were 3
victims bringing the total to 121.
THE HOSPITALS
But what is worrying is the increase in hospitalized patients, especially in intensive care. Since the last bulletin today there are 26 (14 in Cosenza, 6 in CATANZARO and 6 in Reggio Calabria) with an increase of 7 hospitalized compared to 24 hours ago. The department of the CATANZARO university hospital is already saturated, as is the infectious diseases department of the Pugliese hospital, also in the capital. And it is precisely on data like these on which the CTS is based that it must establish whether Calabria is within scenario 4 (“maximum severity and high risk level”) from which, almost automatically, a “light” blocking of two weeks, with verification at the end of the period, as defined by the Undersecretary of Health Sandra Zampa. Lightweight but still foresees the closure of business activities, creating apprehension among the merchants, frightened by the idea of lowering the blinds again.
Today Spirli ‘participated in the meeting with Ministers Boccia and Speranza. A meeting whose start, scheduled for
3:30 pm, it was postponed until after 5:00 pm due to lack of the Dpcm text and then, in the late afternoon, it was updated for a review of the text by the regional presidents. Pending decision, the acting president wanted to “dampen the controversy that arose over the dreaded lack of intensive care bedsand sub-intensive and places for the hospitalization of post-Covid patients waiting to return home. “In this regard, he reported that he personally committed, together with the director general of the Health department, the person in charge of the emergency and the heads of all health structures in the region, to follow “all phases of identification and adaptation of public structures” to attend to the emergency.
