Cagliari, farewell to the night at the Bastione: an infopoint instead of the Caffè degli Spiriti

It is one of the emblematic places of the nightlife of the city. But now most drinks and snacks to the sound of music on the Baluarte terrace are numbered. In the spaces that in the last 30 years have hosted some of the nightclubs that have characterized the city’s nightlife there will be an infopoint, a bookstore and a small tourist café. The decision is made by the Truzzu board and the revolution will begin next fall.

History. On the terrace of the bastion of Saint Remy there is a room of 124 square meters owned by the City Council that in October 1991 the room was rented. And the abandoned space of the Bastione becomes one of the hubs of Cagliari’s modern nightlife. On July 4, 2018 (Zedda city council) the administration launched the public auction for the concession of the premises in order to use it for public exploitation. But the concession expires on October 31, 2021. After that date, the headquarters will return to municipal administration and the Truzzu City Council assumes a different future for the entire area.

The way under the walls. The City Council wants to move from 2021 the room that until now occupied the Caffè degli Spiriti within the monumental complex of the Bastion, together with the “Garden under the walls” (created as part of the project “Path under the walls”), to the Paseo Maritime. Covered (of which the premises is the partial cover) and to the archaeological paths of the Sperone Gallery (recently restored) and to the “Bastione di Santa Caterina” (the restoration and improvement intervention is in progress). For this reason, the City Council has decided to bet on a different allocation method and on an integrated management of the entire monumental complex, overcoming the options of the old resolution that instead focused on a public place.

L’infopoint. The idea of the Municipality is to carry out an activity aimed at enhancing the entire site from a tourist point of view and the space that now occupies the bar will house a place of tourist promotion service of the monument, with infopoint, bookstore, merchandising of articles related to the territorial brand of the city of Cagliari and its identity. And with an adjoining space for a cafeteria, ensuring the presence of a reception and refreshment point, even if it is small. And this to guarantee, in addition to the promotion of the site, also the protection, surveillance and security of the property, protecting it from the possible risks associated with malamovida such as noise pollution and the abandonment of waste. And a page in the history of Cagliari’s nightlife is closed forever.
