(ANSA) – ROME, 01 JAN – Massacre of birds at night in the center of Rome. Hundreds of starlings were found on the ground throughout the area around Termini station, from via Cavour to piazza Esedra and via Nazionale. Local police on site. Images of the macabre discovery immediately went viral.
It is speculated that the birds scared and disoriented by the New Year’s barrels crashed into the street, against windows or against the power lines.
“The ‘New Year’s War’ was back on track this year despite the ban imposed by Mayor Raggi ordinance.” Says, in a note, the International Organization for the Protection of Animals (Oipa). “Every year we repeat it: we must ban the sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnics and convert companies – says the president of Oipa, Massimo Comparotto – The ordinances are useless, in fact there are no controls and every year we count hundreds of dead and injured specimens between wildlife and many pets injured or lost by the barrels and the distraction of the owners. It is time for the legislator to remedy this chaos that also affects humans. It is a question of health, public order and, above all, of civilization. “
Daniele Diaco, chairman of Rome’s Environment Commission, admits: “Unfortunately, few have respected the ordinance that prohibited the use of barrels and firecrackers and this is what happened in Rome: hundreds of starlings died of fear due to the detonation. I hope that over time the awareness that firecrackers generate environmental pollution and cause a serious shock to all animals will increase. ” (HANDLE).
