The men of the Ferrari they had been cautious in remarks about the novelties prepared in Maranello and brought to Russia in Sochi in a program of development steps that includes major updates in two weeks when the Circus returns to the Nurburgring to compete in the Eifel Grand Prix. In qualifying, the performance was not positive, even if Q2 was very excited and Charles Leclerc was probably not in a position to express his full potential and that of the SF1000.
F1 World Constructors Championship after the 2020 Russian GP
In the race, the Monegasque led Ferrari to final sixth place, taking advantage of the knockouts of Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll (for which he was partly responsible in a dynamic that the race bosses judged as ‘no more action’, that is, they were not the extremes to act) making an excellent first stint with medium tires in which he also took advantage of the hard work of Sebastian Vettel as a stopper against Esteban Ocon’s Renault. Renault and Racing Point have spread over Ferrari thanks to Pérez and Ricciardo and Ocon’s double top ten, but McLaren’s zero compacts the four teams fighting for the podium in the constructors’ classification a little more.
Leclerc: “Correct strategy”
Mattia Binotto, Ferrari team manager, commented on the Russian weekend as follows: “A step forward, at least compared to the last races, both in terms of results and competitiveness. This is how we can sum up this weekend’s verdict. Charles’ sixth-place finish came at the end of a very solid race in which he took what he could from the available package: aggressive in the early stages and then handled with great maturity for a driver not yet 23 years old. Sebastian failed to finish in the points, getting caught in traffic in the decisive stages of the start. We had brought some small aerodynamic updates here to Sochi: nothing spectacular in terms of performance, but a step in the right direction of car development. In a championship where the balance of power in the middle of the group is very tight little is needed to progress. We must continue in this direction and that is what we will be doing from the next round, in two weeks at the Nürburgring ”.
