This is probably the most serious attack on art in post-war Germany. At least 70 masterpieces, including ancient Egyptian sarcophagi, sculptures and paintings displayed on Museum Island, the heart of Berlin’s art collections, were damaged by unknown people who sprayed an oily substance on the works.
This was revealed by a joint investigation by The time e from the radio station Deutschlandfunk, according to which the vandals acted on October 3, the day on which the 30th anniversary of German reunification was celebrated. Police and the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz, the foundation that manages all of Berlin’s artistic heritage, confirmed the crime, but did not give details about the works, the extent of the damage or the possible perpetrators. Among the damaged paintings there are gods 19th century paintings, found in the Alte Nationalgalerie. It is not clear what paintings they are, but Arnold Boecklin’s are also in the collection, including the third version of the Isle of the Dead, painted in 1883, which was Adolf Hitler’s favorite painting. At the Neues Museum, on the other hand, he exhibited the bust of Nefertiti, one of the best known Egyptian art finds in the world, comparable only to Tutankhamun’s mask.
The Berlin police opened an investigation, which has seized all the images from the internal cameras and is contacting all the people who had booked a visit on October 3. It may have been this incendiary appeal that prompted some fans to act.
