“Benches on wheels? We buy them and they are very useful ”: interview with director Rita Coccia [IMMAGINI] – School News

The largest school in Umbria is theAlessandro Volta Technical-Technological Institute of Perugia: tells the beauty of 1,850 students. A reality that has grown exponentially since 2012, when the Umbrian institute became part of the group of 21 schools that founded the Indire Avanguardie Educational movement with the “Idea” of Aulas Laboratorio Disiplinare (Ald), classrooms assigned to departments where students They rotate according to the programmed didactic activities.

In 2015 the school decided to purchase the device for each student: reducing the cost of traditional books, loaned for school use to families, and promoting a discount from the distribution company deviceAt the time of enrollment, families were asked to make an effort of about 150 euros. When, last March, the emergency shutdown, the school was unperturbed: after three days and distance learning began, with all students already with their iPad connected to the single telematics platform managed by the school, where they can also insert materials and documents prepared by teachers and students.

Now, a few days before the start of classes, the school is still ready, with the purchase of 800 innovative benches on wheels: the least known and considered almost impossible to find today. The school technique I tried to find out more by interviewing director Rita Coccia.

Doctor Coccia, when did you decide to buy single-seater benches?

Last month, in July, we decided to use the money from the relaunch decree to buy some benches and single-seater chairs with flaps.

What type of banks have you bought?

We purchased innovative desks for the smallest classrooms to accommodate up to 21-22 students and from two different retailers. Then chairs with flaps that will be used until those of Civil Protection arrive (the wait could even last at the end of October).

How many have you bought?

There are 450 delivered on September 8 in the west wing of the school. In the east wing of the institute, another 350 have already been delivered; these are in addition to the innovators already provided by the school. In this way, we have eliminated the very old two-seater desks of one meter and 20 centimeters, where two students would have carried out teaching activities, touching each other’s shoulders, we know well that it is prohibited by current health regulations which foresees no less than one meter of distance . .

But why did you choose the benches on wheels? What are they for?

For us they are ideal, because with the “Disciplinary Laboratory Classes” the students do not sit in them for long, they are especially useful for very small classrooms. Furthermore, even before Covid 19 in some classrooms they were used for methodological didactic innovation.

Have you involved parents in your decisions?

We listened to the president of the school council who was always very close to the school. Due to the short time in the decisions we have not been able to involve more families who, in any case, know the school perfectly and are aware of the great work of innovation that has been carried out in recent years.

How many classrooms have you set up with single-seat desks?

Different. In total, we have 56 classrooms arranged, waiting for those of Commissioner Domenico Arcuri

So on September 14 you will have no problems guaranteeing distancing?

Not really: we have historical space problems, due to the high number of students. We have been asking for additional classrooms for years. With us, the problem is not getting students to sit down and work in class. The problem is recreation, common areas and the gym, where there are only two changing rooms: in these cases the distance of two meters imposed by the CTS is not feasible.

Have you requested additional spaces from the province?

No, we have been in trouble for four years. We have avoided creating more critical issues.

How many single-seater banks of the ministry, managed by commissioner Domenico Arcuri, are you waiting for?

We ordered 450 cars. In this way, our “rotating” teaching is assured. They will be directed mainly to the classrooms where the theory is carried out.

In an average classroom of 40-42 square meters, how many students will be able to enter while keeping the “word of mouth” meter indicated by the Scientific Technical Committee?

It depends on how the radiators are placed, how the escape routes can be created, where the windows are located and also the entrance. In general, I found that it ranges between 18 and 23 students.

What do you have planned for the first days of school?

We will have a welcome from Covid, so that students understand how they will have to behave: how to enter school, how to wash their hands, when to wear a mask, how to move. On the first day, only the first classes will arrive at school: 400 students, to avoid crowds. Then, day after day, it will touch others.

So will the training offer start in a reduced mode?

Until Christmas, one day a week 13 or 14 classes will do Integrated Digital Education at home. The disciplines that Ddi will do are physical education, religion, then alternative activity, one hour of six of Italian, in turn other disciplines that the College will approve on September 1.

How many hours of lessons per week do you plan to do?

All hours provided by school regulations for technical institutes: 32 hours. Of these 32 hours, 5 hours will be rotated remotely for each class, in order to relieve the total student population during recess and avoid crowds.
