The two victims were 25 and 24 years old. In both countries the sale and use of barrels was prohibited.
PARIS. In France, a 25-year-old boy was beheaded in an explosion of fireworks during an inspection. A person who was inspecting the blast site was also the victim of an explosion and received treatment for facial injuries. The fatal accident occurred in the Lower Rhine region. Another accident occurred in Boofzheim, a town about thirty kilometers from Strasbourg and near the German border, where a man was injured by the delayed explosion of a firecracker.
The sale and use of fireworks was prohibited this year in the region since the beginning of December to avoid accidents and the subsequent intervention of emergency services facing the crisis caused by the Covid pandemic.
In neighboring Germany, police reported that a 24-year-old boy died after lighting a homemade firework in Rietz-Neuendorf, about 30 kilometers southeast of Berlin.
Police said Friday that experts found several other unused devices nearby. Germany has banned the sale of fireworks this year, to discourage demonstrations and reduce the large number of serious injuries that clog hospitals every night on New Year’s Eve.
