According to reports by L’Espresso, at the center of the investigations would be non-repayable loans in favor of the Spes cooperative, the operational arm of Caritas de Ozieri, in the province of Sassari, the original diocese of Becciu. The owner and legal representative is Antonino Becciu, brother of the cardinal. The aid would have been requested and obtained on three occasions and the intention is to check whether there have been complaints or pressure on the CEI leadership: in September 2013, 300 thousand euros for the modernization of the premises; in 2015 another 300 thousand euros for a reform after a fire. The funds would be taken from eight per thousand. In April 2018, on the other hand, 100 thousand euros would have been allocated to reception facilities. The funds would have been taken from the Obolo di San Pietro, at that time under Becciu’s direct control.
And the embezzlement hypothesis refers to this sum. The cardinal, however, claims that he never kidnapped money, but simply responded to a request for help made by the diocese: the money would have been sent to the Caritas fund, controlled by the bishop. And Bishop II of Ozieri, Corrado Melis, explained that “the diocesan Caritas of Ozieri is and has never been the beneficiary of any act of favor, much less undue.” While the lawyer Ivano Iai, emphasizes that “they are false reconstructions.
