The horrible video filmed yesterday, November 11, in the emergency room of the Cardarelli hospital in Naples, in which you see a dead man, found in the bathroom, must be viewed in its entirety. Let me be clear: it is not for everyone. It lasts just over a minute, but it leaves its mark. It is filmed in the Obi, Intensive Short Observation, a pre-ward where patients stop to be classified. This is Cardarelli’s most critical area, a bottleneck where patients of all kinds are stationed and which, long before Covid, was the subject of enormous problems. Today, with the ongoing pandemic, hospital pathways must ensure that patients suspected of positive viruses are separated from patients with other illnesses.
In the video, a man is heard saying, pointing to the lifeless patient on the ground: «This … died! This is Cardarelli hospital … we are here in the emergency room here it is ….is here (indicates a wrinkled old man on a gurney ed.) is in the middle of urine and food we do not know if he is alive or if he is dead … (indicates a stretcher at the bottom ed.) We do not know anything! ».
So the crash movie isn’t just about a dead man. Talk about a situation. The voice of those who took the cell phone to document is angry, indignant: he wanted to document and did it. That video was then passed on via WhatsApp to another person who published it on Facebook (at least this is the hypothesis, there is an investigation by the Postal Police on the case). It could be a patient, an assistant, a nurse, a doctor. It could be anyone.
The Cardarelli hospital described as “deplorable” the fact that the video was broadcast on all information channels. A distinction must be made: on social networks (which are not media) the video was published in many cases without obscuring the faces of the sick and deceased. Most of the newspapers, on the other hand, have hidden everyone’s faces, as is correct.
The medical director of the largest hospital in the South has been concerned – legitimately – about respecting the privacy of the sick and deceased, initiating an internal investigation “to be able to know everything and gather information on who may have recovered the deceased patient.” But the rest? After all, do we care or not? In the video we see very serious things: there is no minimum distance between patients, there are six, seven beds stacked and ill in obviously critical condition left crumpled on a bed. There are boxes of food on the floor, the sick on very hard blue stretchers well known by those who have been Cardarelli’s “guests”: absolutely unsuitable for a harsh and uncomfortable hospital stay, they add suffering to suffering.
An old man, obviously in serious critical condition, parked in the bunk under a room sign: it is evident that there were no more places and they put it there. Plastic bags with personal effects on the floor, IV poles placed almost everywhere, just like gas and liquid oxygen tanks.
That is why it is correct to see, show and for journalists to fully disseminate (covering faces) the shocking film of the Cardarelli of Naples. Because if someone continues to deny the state of suffering in Campania’s health care today, with the pandemic underway, that minute of video is just to remind them of the reality with the violence of a failure.. And suggest that he stop puzzling her.
