Due to the marine meteorological conditions present in the Gulf of Trieste, the Race Committee, based on the indications of the Harbor Master’s Office and after consulting the organizing company, evaluated the meteorological alert issued by Civil Protection and the meteorological forecasts issued by the Osmer for today, Sunday October 11, decided to cancel the Fall Cup – Barcolana 52 presented by Generali.
The decision was taken this morning at 7 in the morning, given the evolution of the weather according to the Bora forte forecast and the completion of the meteorological alert issued yesterday by the authorities.
“Faced with marine climatic conditions like the current one – commented the president of the SVBG, media Gialuz – Seafarers recognize the need to keep shore crews and ships safe. We have worked with great commitment to carry out the event safely with regard to health aspects, now we have to respond in the most correct way and according to the marine logic to the weather and cancel the regatta. It is a demanding but necessary decision that preserves all the people of Barcolana and respects all those family crews with small boats that are the heart of this regatta. There is something liberating in the fact that the wind hits Covid: we have overcome the difficulties associated with the organization of Barcolana in this context, and stopping in this edition was only our natural element, the wind.”.
The organizers monitored the evolution of conditions throughout the night, worked to reinforce the moorings, sent the tug to sea at 4 in the morning and positioned the departure buoys at 4.30 this morning: at 5.30 it was placed the tugboat at the height of Boa 1 in order to measure the wind in that strategic area of the Gulf for the regatta and from there provide the necessary information for subsequent evaluations of sea and wind conditions.
At 7 o’clock, during the briefing at the Port Authority, the decision was made to cancel the regatta. “As we have remembered several times in recent weeks – commented the president Gialuz – Last July our Sandro Chersi left us, one of the inspiring fathers of the regatta, a great expert in weather forecasting. Here, we dedicate this demanding election to him because we know that he would have approved it, and we close this edition with his words: the good sailor saves the ship and its crew in the storm, the excellent sailor has chosen not to go out, and looks from the window. the good sailor at sea, as he fights to save the ship and the crew. Sandro, our goal is to be excellent sailors, as you have taught us”.
