According to an Australian study, the coronavirus could also be contracted by touching a simple bill. Reason: the virus would resist on the pieces of paper that we touch and take in our hands every day and exchange even to pay for coffee. Could it be true? There is no other evidence, apart from this study, that claims how the virus resists objects such as banknotes and mobile phones for up to 28 days in cold and dark conditions.
This is supported by research from the Australian National Scientific Organization (Commonwealth Industrial and Scientific Research Organization – Csiro). The researchers tested the longevity of the coronavirus in the dark at three different temperatures and saw that the survival rate decreased as temperatures increased. At 20 degrees Celsius, it was “extremely strong” on smooth surfaces like cell phone screens, surviving for 28 days, while at 30 degrees, survival was reduced to 7 days, to just 24 hours at 40 degrees.
Survival is lower on porous surfaces like cotton, the scientists added. These are “significantly longer” results than in previous studies. As the institute noted, the coronavirus is mainly transmitted by air, but more research is needed to better understand transmission through surfaces, knowledge “fundamental to developing risk mitigation strategies in high-contact areas.”
