Carrara, December 30, 2020 – A storm of ’round’ snow, historic for our city that had never experienced such a phenomenon, fell last night in the areas of Avenza and Marina. Around 3 o’clock in the afternoon a violent rain of frozen grains broke out, which at first made us think of a very rare heavy snowfall in our area. But it was the so-called round snow, a meteoric phenomenon that is neither snow nor hail but is classified by itself. Synonymous with “gragnola” or “graupel”, it is a type of precipitation officially recognized by both the World Meteorological Organization and the National Meteorological Service of the Italian Air Force.

Its characteristics are so clear that it cannot be confused with snow or hail. It is a solid precipitation formed by grains of opaque white ice with a diameter of between 2 and 5 millimeters. The shape of these ice grains is mainly spherical, and they have a type of easily malleable and behavioral structure, so much so that when they impact the ground, during precipitation, they crumble. But last night the circular snow did not melt immediately and formed a white blanket especially along Viale XX Settembre between the railway bridge and Giampaoli and on the neighboring streets, creating some problems with the circulation, however, almost nothing due to the touch. curfew and schedule.
