The situation in Trentino is returning to normal after heavy snowfall in recent hours. The discomforts are registered mainly in the towns and cities. Yesterday was another day full of snow, yesterday in all Trentino. With the stop of the convoys of the Valsugana line – replaced by buses – a new closure of the Caffaro state highway in Ponte Pià nelle Giudicarie.
The list of major inconveniences stopped here only thanks to the combination of the calendar (a January 2 that fell on a Saturday, between the New Year’s holiday and Sunday today) and provisions against contagion. In short, few trucks and few cars around. And fortunately, because for more than seven hours, approximately between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., the flakes continued to fall even at the bottom of the valley, Asta dell’Adige and the capital city included, continuing to whiten the views (suggestively) and roads (much less).
Going to bring to the ground between 5 and 15 centimeters in the lower altitudes (8 in Rovereto, 15 in the city of Trento, between 20 and 35 in the suburbs depending on the different altitudes) and between 40 and 90 centimeters of fresh mantle in the valleys. All the snow that added to that fall, copious and evenly in Trentino, on New Year’s Day, the day before yesterday. A situation that could easily have led to chaos in the circulation of a normal day – or almost – as it was last Monday, especially in the morning. Even yesterday, in fact, despite the fact that the Province and the municipalities have deployed hundreds of men and vehicles to deal with the situation, those who had to drive to work between the first morning and around 10 o’clock had to deal with a situation that was not always easy to solve. He will also take care of the necessary and appropriate equipment. The rain in the afternoon helped many men at work and in Trento most of the streets at night were clean.
New avalanche in Ponte Pià.
The most significant problems occurred along the Caffaro state highway, between Ponte Arche and Saone: at the point where an avalanche broke out last Monday, snow and stones again invaded the road. The road was closed shortly after 11 a.m. and will remain uninhabitable until at least noon today. Traffic, like a few days ago, was diverted along the provincial 222 of the Duron pass, whose cleanliness was especially careful given the increase in traffic that it must sustain at least until today. On the spot, the local Giudicarie police and volunteer firefighters from the area, who were also in charge of managing the detours between Borgo Lares on one side and Bleggio Superiore on the other.
Bondone, provincial 85 closed.
During the day, Provincial Highway 85 between Vason and Viote was closed for a few hours due to some snow spills on the road, which, however, did not cause excessive inconvenience. Provincial highway 25 that goes up from Garniga Vecchia to Viote has been closed for days due to the danger of avalanches.
Valsugana, train stop.
The persistence of snow has led RFI technicians and managers to decide to stop rail traffic along the Valsugana line. No critical problems were found along the tracks between Trento and Bassano, but the risk that avalanches could overflow the line led to a precautionary blockage.
All the canceled trains, since early morning yesterday, were replaced by buses, not without difficulty by Trentino Trasporti, which was informed of Rfi’s decision only on Friday afternoon and had to organize the bus service within a few hours.
Also throughout today the trains between Trento and Bassano and vice versa will be replaced by buses.
Trento – Malé, Corsican race.
Fewer inconveniences along the Trento – Malé line, with a number of trains that, however, was decidedly reduced to ensure that delays linked to line conditions did not create overlapping of trains according to standard times. However, the inconvenience for users was limited, since the scissors of the scheduled trains were designed to guarantee at least one train every forty minutes.
Forecasts.
The snow will continue to fall even today. However, not everywhere: since yesterday afternoon at the bottom of the valley the flakes have given way to rain, which fell overnight at an altitude of about 400 meters. Today’s snow level will gradually increase, but the snow will continue to descend until the end of the afternoon in the towns from 700 meters upwards. However, it is more than 900 meters that even today the precipitation will bring to the ground accumulations of some importance – between fifteen and twenty centimeters – while at lower altitudes the nature of the snowfall, with respect to what happened on Friday and yesterday, will be with all residual, with the rise in temperatures that will bring rain to large sectors of the province.
In some areas it will also be possible to return to see some rays of the sun, even if the weather image will remain altered until at least Wednesday.
