The director of the “Cassarà” of Palermo, Daniela Crimi, explains that for the return to school in January at the moment it is not different from September, especially with regard to transport. Differentiated schedules are not a viable solution. Is the school safe? We do not know what happens outside the school, says the principal to Orizzonte Scuola.
The return to school in January is at the center of the Government’s action: territorial coordination tables have already been activated to guarantee a plan to reopen schools as provided by the Dpcm of December 3.
On January 7, you must also return to class at secondary schools with 75% in presence, the 25% through integrated digital teaching.
As we wrote previously, the fuse that could unleash the third wave of catastrophic effects for the national health system could be precisely the schools reopening. SThere are no major developments in transport and differentiated schedules at the moment, and the Government is concerned above all about the situation that will arise with the Christmas holidays..
For this reason, the reopening of schools in January raises doubts and concerns. Are we ready to welcome high school students who arrive to school primarily by public transportation into the classroom? The transport system, the Achilles heel of the Italian system even before the covid, which in September already showed its limits?
A School horizon the director of the “Cassarà” linguistic institute in Palermo, Daniela crimi, explains his point of view on the critical issues of January’s return to school.
Under these conditions, do you feel comfortable returning to attend in January? At the moment there does not seem to have been any great news about transport, for example, a fundamental node for upper secondary schools.
We expect a return in January in the same conditions that we were in September. On the transport front, it seems to me that nothing concrete has been done, only the umpteenth follow-up that is now taking over our days but no real initiative that can also be undertaken. For example, the number of trips could have increased by increasing buses and borrowing them from the private sector, which today is still due to the tourism crisis. An excellent service would have been done to the students by ensuring the adequate distance and at the same time supporting the crisis of the transport companies. It would have been a good example of public-private cooperation. But nothing of this kind has been done, at least here in Sicily. In any case, the effort continues to be demanded from the schools, as if what other sectors cannot achieve is done by the school at any price, adapting and adapting to all needs. I find it too comfortable a position. The school will make every possible effort, as it has done before, but all sectors must do their part, starting with the mobility sector.
What do you think of the different schedules, with lessons starting at 8 and 10? Is it a solution that was already adopted in September? Do you plan to adopt it? Many of my colleagues in Italy are not convinced
Differentiated schedules are not an adequate solution, because there are not all the careers of the means of transport, at all hours, and the commuter children, I have 40% of the entire hinterland of the province and more than 30 municipalities, without However, they are forced to take the only path early in the morning. So postponing check-in time doesn’t make sense in more than half of the cases.
In your opinion, based on your experience in recent months, is school a safe place as Minister Azzolina has been saying for months or is there an internal difficulty that can lead to contagion at school?
The school is in my opinion a safe place where all the security measures are verified, clearly we do not know what happens outside the school and this is not in our possibility of intervention or competition. We must stop thinking that the school should and can control the driveways, it is just a convenient way to discharge any uncomfortable responsibility to the school.
Would you be in favor of extending the lessons until the end of June or the beginning of July (obviously excluding high school students)? Do you think we really need to regain learning?
I don’t understand this story of having to “catch up” on lessons in June or July. Until now we have done it all the time on a regular basis, certainly at a distance as was imposed on us. Learning will recover over time, it will take months, it would be naive to believe that it can be recovered in summer. We are all aware of this, this will be the Covid generation, which has certainly lost some skills, but on the other hand has developed other, different ones. The world is constantly changing and the school is within that process, sometimes it is the mirror, other times the engine.
Speaking of state tests: what are you looking forward to this year? Has last year’s formula convinced you?
The state test certainly cannot be “normal.” Last year’s one worked well, though perhaps too simple. At least I would do a written test. Separated, you can do it.
