Bolzano, January 3, 2021 – Two ski mountaineers they died overwhelmed by one avalanche in Val Senales. The victims are attorney Michael Gruener, 65, former president of the Raiffeisen bank, and his wife, Monika Gamper, 52. The tragedy occurred around 1:50 p.m., when an avalanche affected the two skiers, on Monte Croce, about 2,500 meters, in the municipality of Senales.

Gruener was originally from Val Senales and was considered a highly experienced ski mountaineer. The well-known Bolzano lawyer headed Raiffeisen Landesbank for 23 years, until last June, then handed over to Hanspeter Felder.

The mass of snow, which fell on Short Maso, hit them above the town of Certosa. A witness raised the alarm and help was immediately activated, but the thick fog found at high altitudes slowed helicopter search operations.

When the two were joined, the woman still showed signs of life, but despite the rescue at the scene, she died. More than 100 rescuers from the Senales, Laces and Merano Provincial Mountain Rescue, the Val Senales volunteer firefighters and the Carabinieri participate in the search operations. The danger of avalanches is these days in South Tyrol Grade 3 ‘marked’.
