CANAZEI. An avalanche of snow of approx. 600 meters overwhelmed the historic refuge of Pian dei fiacconi, at the foot of the Marmolada, destroying it completely.
The avalanche washed away the refuge in the late afternoon yesterday Monday December 14. The snow gap occurred between Punta Rocca and Punta Penia, with an extended front 600 meters. The particularly steep area could only carry the avalanche violently down the valley until it reached Pian dei Fiacconi.
The alarm was raised by the pilot of a helicopter that was flying over the area, in La Marmolada, in the late afternoon of December 14. From above, the helicopter pilot clearly saw the mark left by falling off a large amount of snowand below he glimpsed the refuge, semi-senate.
The avalanche destroyed the structure. The mountain rescue has already carried out a remediation excluding that there are people involved.
After last week’s heavy snow and snow accumulations, natural avalanches they are happening at high altitudes throughout the region.
