At least 98 people were killed in Sunday’s blasts in Bata, Equatorial Guinea – that’s more than three times the number of deaths that were initially reported. According to the president of the country, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, the explosions were caused by the negligent handling of the deposits of dynamite and explosives accumulated in a military base. Many volunteers spent Monday searching the debris for the bodies all day, and three children were found still alive and taken to the hospital. At least 615 people were injured and now the Bata Regional Hospital is overcrowded. The Ministry of Health I ask Health workers volunteers to come to the hospital to help and said there is an urgent need for blood donors.
Most of the city’s buildings were severely damaged after the explosions. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema said the military base would catch fire after farmers burned nearby farmland to clear it. The president has asked for international aid and Spain has made it known that it will send humanitarian aid immediately.
