For forty years the Carmelite father was among the leading Latin experts in the Vatican. Passionate teacher known around the world for his teaching method

Father Reginald Foster, a priest and Latinist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a friar of the Discalced Carmelite order, passed away at the age of 81 on Christmas Day. Until 2009 he worked in the Latin Literature section of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, and for forty years he was one of the Pope’s Latinists, as well as a Latin teacher.
A formation that Father Foster recognized throughout the world, especially for its unique pedagogical method and for the presentation of the Latin language as “alive”. He taught generations of students to love the Latin language and the city of Rome in his Roma Latina summer program, Summer Rome Coasts; it is always offered free of charge. In 2010, the University of Notre Dame in Indiana awarded him the Laurea Honoris causa for his contribution to the studies of this language.
Many times invited on the microphones of our station to speak about the language of the Popes and the main questions of the Church, Father Foster also spoke about the consistory explaining how much of the vocabulary related to this important event derives precisely from Latin, including the red cap. and the word cardinal: “The cardinals are the cornerstones on which the Church revolves …”; we say “create cardinals” because the word create means to name them … “.
