It’s Apple’s third streaming event in 2020 and it starts off without too many compliments with CEO Tim Cook in the lobby of the Steve Jobs Theater. Without ado, immediately a product launch: HomePod Mini. And then all the remaining time spent on the new iPhones.

iPhone 12, 5G arrived. The iPhone 12 lands on the stage of the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park, the gigantic circular headquarters where the Apple company is based. And it brings with it several innovations, one above all, the true sign of the change of era for its most famous product: 5G. Obviously, the performance of the connection needs to be evaluated when the new standard is fully operational, but a good part of the keynote is dedicated to explaining how under ideal conditions and with the fastest network, the iPhone 12 is capable of reaching 4 gigabits. per second. But 5G might not be enough for Apple for its next-gen model, so the iPhone changes shape and colors (five). And screen, with Super Retina XDR on all models. There’s also a new technology to stiffen the screen, the ceramic shield, which Apple says is four times more resistant to drops. Also important is what is inside the iPhone 12, or the A14 Bionic chip, a clear evolution in the A13, to the point that Apple may announce an iPhone version of the game League of Legends, an important title in the field of games. eSports, which needs relevant hardware resources to perform at its best, and that now comes in a smartphone capable of sustaining the effort.
Naturally, the cameras get better too, supported by computational photography and the third generation of Smart Hdr. When it comes to videos, Apple talks about “the best results ever” on smartphones. Looking at the demos, which also include a new night timelapse mode, the results of the new photographic sector seem important. As many anticipated, there will be no charger in the packaging of the new iPhones. An environmental choice, explains Lisa Jackson in the keynote address, which in terms of energy savings “equates to taking 450,000 cars off the road a year,” says Jackson. During announcements, as always happens, Apple’s stock falls 1.55% on the stock market.

And there is also the Mini version. One surprise that comes out of a James Bond case is the iPhone 12 Mini, a first in the range. The Mini is naturally the smallest, with the 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display, and retains all the features of the larger 12, in a smaller chassis. The design of the 12 has changed from the 11. The iPhone 12 Mini and 12 are made of aluminum, the Pros of steel. The design of this new edition takes up the one inaugurated with the latest iPad Pro and Air, square edges and rounded corners. The “notch” with the now faster Face ID sensor seems a bit smaller.

12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. It is the first time that Apple has introduced such a wide range of smartphones. The iPhone 12 is actually four different models, and the range is completed by the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The largest iPhone 12 is the Pro Max, with a 6.7-inch screen. All are based on OLED technology; therefore, no iPhone 12 adopts an LED display. The Pro also comes with Apple ProRaw photography technology, which brings iPhone photography closer to traditional photography thanks to computational photography algorithms. Here too the demo images show unprecedented results on a smartphone, but the news also reaches the videos: in the Pro you can shoot in HDR 10 and Dolby Vision HDR, in 4K / 60 frames per second. The shot can be edited and modified directly on the smartphone. The iPhone 12 Pro are currently the only smartphones with similar capabilities. The photographic sector is then completed with the LidAR laser eye, which in fact gives the iPhone 12 Pro the ability to “see” the environment around it in real time, without having to perform depth calculations, but determining it in real time. It is a technology that paves the way for several advances in photographic capacity and augmented reality applications.

And the prices? The Italian price list is in line with that of the last generation, except for the Mini, which debuts this year. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini will start with 64GB of memory, then 128 and 256, starting at 939 and 839 euros, respectively. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available with 128, 256 and 512 GB of memory starting at € 1,189/1289, respectively. Pre-orders for 12 and 12 Pro begin at 2:00 p.m. (Italian time) on Friday, October 16, with availability starting on Friday, October 23, Mini and Pro Max from 2:00 p.m. November 6, with availability from November 13.

HomePod Mini. The main presentation formula has been refined, with careful direction for the launch of this smart speaker focusing on sound quality, privacy, and artificial intelligence skills. One of the most important capabilities of the new speaker is the presence of Ultra Wide Band technology, through which the HomePod Mini recognizes the presence of the iPhone and can “translate” the audio from the phone directly to the speaker. Besides Apple Music, it can work with other music streaming services, including Amazon Prime Music, but not Spotify at the moment. And after all, the situation between Apple and Spotify right now is not exactly relaxed. The version of Siri on this speaker is upgraded and the speaker also functions as a home automation assistant, controlling connected devices that act as a central hub. Interesting is the “Intercom” capability through which HomePod Mini can function as a “communicator” of messages and notifications in real time, in audio, which can be sent from any personal and family Apple device. For now, however, and as it happened with the original HomePod, it will not arrive in Italy, or at least there is no set date.
