All Italian children and young people, some as of Monday, will go back to school. However, with a bitter assessment that the prevalence of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has decreased since schools and universities limited their opening to the majority of students in February and March, until their final closure. The Government and Ministry of Education working group is up and running, and despite many changes (sometimes daily and sudden), we have all understood better the measures that need to be put in place to create safer environments.

Minor risks for the little ones?

Scientific evidence shows that the coronavirus (COVID-19) poses a lower risk for children than adults of becoming seriously ill. There is no evidence that children transmit the disease more than adults. However, there will still be risks as long as the coronavirus (COVID-19) remains in the community. And the data of the last days are more than worrying.

Manage risks differently

To manage risk, things will be a little different in the spring semester. The Government and the Minister have asked kindergartens, kindergartens and, in general, all schools at all levels and levels to put in place a series of protective measures to reduce risks. Your child’s kindergarten, preschool, and school will be able to tell you more about the changes they have made. The school administrators have prepared a series of documents that you will find published on the institutional website. Read them and circulate them.

School attendance

It is vital that children and youth return to school and college, for their educational progress, for their well-being and for their broader development. School attendance is mandatory from the beginning of the new year. This means that it is your legal duty as a parent to send your child (if they are of compulsory school age) to school regularly. There is no corresponding legal obligation for education after the age of 16, but if a young person does not attend it, it is good to notify the school.

Compulsive education

Local authorities and schools have a number of legal powers to enforce attendance of a child or young person who, for no reason, does not attend school without a valid reason.

If you are not sure whether your child will return to school because you think he may have other risk factors (frail student), you should discuss this with your school. They should be able to explain the ways things are changing to reduce risks. There are resources to support you.

Self-insulation and shielding

A small number of children and youth may not be able to participate according to public health councils because:

  • they are self-insulating (in mandatory and voluntary quarantine)
  • have experienced symptoms themselves
  • I am in close contact with someone who has coronavirus (COVID-19).

If your child cannot attend school or university for these reasons, ask your school what support they can provide for distance learning. All schools have already approved the Integrated Digital Education Plan.

See the guide on shielding and protecting people who are medically defined as extremely vulnerable (fragile). Children and youth under medical care may need to discuss their care with their doctor before returning to school. If children cannot attend school because they are following clinical and / or public health advice, you will not be penalized. Do this, with full privacy protection, to DS.

Help make day care centers, preschools and schools as safe as possible

Each daycare center and each school will do their own health and safety risk assessment as part of planning for the fall / winter period.

What will schools do in addition to handling confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) according to current public health guidelines?

In addition to what is foreseen in the different protocols, and in the school regulations, as well as in the Plan, it is always useful:

  • make sure everyone washes their hands more often than usual, including upon arrival, returning from breaks, and before and after eating (this should be done for 20 seconds with soap and running water or hand sanitizer);
  • promote the “take it, pick it up, kill it” approach to ensure good respiratory hygiene;
  • improve cleanliness, including more frequent cleaning of frequently touched surfaces;
  • minimize contact between people where possible. This could mean using different rooms for different age groups and keeping these groups separate;
  • keep your distance as much as possible.

Actions you can take

Do not send your child to daycare, kindergarten, or school if:

  • are showing symptoms of the coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • someone in your family is showing symptoms.

Arrange a test if you or your child develop symptoms after going to school. Inform health authorities and your nursery or school of the results.

If the test is positive, follow the instructions for families with coronavirus (COVID-19) and participate in the selection process of all possible infected.

The kind of “Anti Covid-19 Provisions for Students and Students”

The model relating to the “Anti Covid-19 provisions for male and female students” should be as clear as possible. Not, therefore, only the Regulation or the Plan, but something more accessible.

For the executive professor Vincenzo Caico, a true promoter of innovation, at the head of an important institute in the province of Gorizia, the State Institute of Higher Education “Michelangelo Buonarroti” (it is an institution of higher education that includes: Liceo Secondary school of applied science sciences, sports high school and linguistic high school) of Monfalcone (GO) believes that “the right way to talk to young people and speak with their language and share the decisions that must be made.” The Regulation that we attach, the result of these educational policies, is, without a doubt, an irreplaceable document that every institution must adopt.
