German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke in Parliament on Wednesday morning to discuss measures to combat the coronavirus epidemic, and to call for new ones that are even more restrictive than those currently in force. Germany, like all European countries, is in the middle of the so-called “second wave” of the pandemic and just yesterday, Tuesday, December 8, registered the maximum number of deaths from COVID-19 so far in 24 hours: 590.
In a particularly passionate speech, Merkel agreed with the call made to the government by the Leopoldina National Academy of Sciences, which had called for tighter restrictions for the run-up and post-Christmas period, calling for schools to close from December 14 and minimize social interactions during the two weeks of vacation. Merkel said she will discuss it with the federal governors of the countries, so that the new restrictions can be approved as soon as possible throughout Germany.
“As difficult as it is – and I know how much love has gone into preparing the mulled wine and waffle stands – all this is not compatible with the rule of being able to buy food on the street and then consume it at home. I’m sorry, I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart, but if the price we have to pay is 590 deaths a day, that’s not acceptable. And if scientists are practically begging us to cut back on contact for a week before we can see grandparents and seniors again at Christmas, then perhaps we should consider whether or not we should take school holidays to 16. than on December 19. What will we say in the future, looking back, if we have not been able to find a solution for three days, while a momentous event unfolds? And maybe it’s not fair to send the kids home, but there will be digital education or something else. I don’t know, it’s not my area of expertise and I don’t want to interfere. But I want to say that if there are too many contacts now, in the lead up to Christmas, and it turns out that this is the last Christmas that we will spend with our grandparents, then we would have done something wrong. And we cannot allow it.
