Viterbo – We receive and publish – From 1985 to 2019, there were 1,397 seropositive subjects in the Asl de Viterbo. During the same period considered, full-blown AIDS notifications, diagnosed in the company’s services, were 440 and, although since 2000 there have been There has been a progressive decrease, the number of notifications cumulatively associated with sexually transmitted infections now exceeds the number of notifications associated with drug addiction. Therefore, after 2000, more than half of the patients residing in Tuscia developed AIDS after an infection caused by sexual intercourse.

This information is made public by the Territorial Reference Center for Infectious Diseases, directed by Roberto Monarca, on the occasion of the world day against AIDS, which has been celebrated worldwide since 1988 on December 1 of each year.

The report, prepared with the participation of doctors Stefano Aviani and Serena Dell’Isola, highlights how, over the years, and in particular from 2000 to today, in line with national and international data, the first diagnoses in drug addicts , while the first diagnoses in homosexual and heterosexual subjects increased and remained stable. Contagion associated with sexual intercourse therefore seems to be very prevalent in recent cases compared to that associated with drugs.

The study carried out by the Territorial Reference Center for Infectious Diseases also shows that the main opportunistic pathologies, for which full-blown AIDS is reported, are esophageal candidiasis and HIV-related encephalopathy. And again, from 2000 to 2017 there was a steady slight increase in new HIV diagnoses, compared to the steady decline recorded until the late 1990s. 2017 and 2018 saw a stabilization of new diagnoses.

In general, the incidence of HIV infection and diagnosis of AIDS in the province of Viterbo is equal to that of Rome and the Lazio region: 2.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. As in the rest of the territorial realities of Lazio, the cases of contagion are largely attributable to the male sex (3 men for every 4 new cases) and mainly associated with the age group between 25 and 35 years. Furthermore, between 2001 and 2019, the population with HIV / AIDS treated in Viterbo and on antiretroviral treatment doubled (from 79.5% in 2001 to 97.9% in 2019).

This reflects the international orientation in favor of the early initiation of treatment with less toxic and more manageable drugs, also with a view to a Tasp (treatment as prevention), although the risk of HIV infection persists among the residents of Viterbo that requires maintaining the commitment care and education for health in the area to face this epidemic.

The territorial reference center for Infectious Diseases is located on floor 0 of Block D of Belcolle. The activity for users is carried out every day of the week, except holidays, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first visits do not require a reservation or request from the treating physician. Serological tests for HIV and other sexually transmitted agents (eg, syphilis) can be performed without reservation, without referral from the treating physician, and fasting is not required. The collection of HIV complaints made outside the service can be done at any time in the morning.

The center also performs prevention, diagnosis and therapy of HIV disease and related diseases, guaranteeing home care throughout the province of Viterbo for HIV disease and chronic viral hepatitis in the decompensation phase. The center also implements social, psychological and counseling support actions for HIV infections and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The activity of the infectious disease specialist is also carried out at the Tarquinia hospital, on Thursdays from 10.30 to 13.30 and in Civita Castellana, at the outpatient clinic, on Wednesdays from 10 to 14.
