The Egyptian doctor, who succeeded Osama Bin Laden at the head of the terrorist organization, died a week ago in Ghazni, Afghanistan. for “breathing problems” and asthma complications he suffered, so he did not receive adequate care.
A Pakistani security source in tribal areas near the Afghan border said he was “sure he died of natural causes.” Another Pakistani security source involved in counterterrorism operations told Arab News that al-Zawahiri passed away about a month ago. An Al Qaeda source in Afghanistan said the organization’s leader died in early November and the funeral ceremony has already taken place. “What we do know is that he had some respiratory problems and that he died somewhere in Afghanistan,” he added.
At the moment Official confirmation of death is missing., both from the security agency and Al Qaeda itself, but Rita Katz, Site director, defined the news of al-Zawahiri’s death as “very plausible” last week. “It is typical of al-Qaeda not to quickly release the news of the death of its leaders,” he explained. Hassan Hassan, director of the US-based Center for Global Policy, also said al-Zawahiri died a month ago of natural causes. However, this is not the first time that news of the al-Qaeda leader’s death has circulated, as have many reports of his poor health.
