The District Attorney’s Office, in the framework of the investigations against Giovanni Pietro Marchese, 60, sole administrator of the Rest House “San Camillo srl” based in Aci Sant’Antonio, of Giovanna Giuseppina Coco, 37, Rosaria Marianna Vasta and Alessandra Di Mauro, both 41 years old, the three employees of the aforementioned retirement home, requested and obtained the measure of temporary prohibition of the exercise of business activity, for a period of 12 months, against the administrator of the structure , as well as the scope of the temporary prohibition of the exercise of the profession in nursing homes and care facilities for the elderly, for a period of 9 months, against the three employees, carried out by the Carabinieri of the Aci Sant ‘Antonio Station .
The investigation stems from the seizure of some mobile phones, which took place in July 2019; Among the seized devices, in particular, the content of the cell phone owned by Coco Giovanna Giuseppina was investigated. Inside the aforementioned device, numerous photographs were identified, taken inside the retirement home in the period between March and June 2019, showing the mistreatment of elderly patients.
The analysis of the images reveals the precarious hygienic and health care condition in which the guests of “Villa San Camillo” are forced to live: in particular, the elderly are observed completely naked, abandoned on the ground together with their excrement , fitted with the protective bars of his bed, with striking wounds, and above all a photo that shows the conditions of development of a pressure ulcer in an elderly patient, not adequately treated and consequently significantly aggravated over time.
In concert with the magistrate in charge of the investigations, the carabinieri initiated the investigative investigations corroborated by a preliminary inspection visit by the soldiers from the local station who, assisted by colleagues from the Catania Labor Inspection Unit, determined how within In one of the bedrooms on the first floor, a guest was literally trapped in his bed, unable to get up and due to chairs and a sofa placed at the sides of the bed, which prevented any movement.
In addition, during the operations, the NIL carabinieri found that, in addition to the people usually hired, eleven employees were working illegally, including two of the current suspects, Di Mauro and Vasta, and some of these were deferred to a state of freedom for having illegally received income from citizenship.
Hence the need to also make use of technical investigations that would allow revealing how the manager of the structure, holder of a guarantee position in front of the guests entrusted to the retirement home, had not supervised the employees so as not to prevent them mistreating the elders of the facility and creating a habitual environment of harassment, humiliation and mortification to their detriment; neglecting care, including medical care, and care for the elderly and the poor sanitary conditions of the nursing home (where rats have been sighted and the elderly have contracted scabies), thus aggravating the state of physical and mental suffering of the guests.
At the same time, it was found how this negligent behavior on the part of the owner allowed the three employees, as people to whom the hospitalized elderly were entrusted for reasons of care and assistance, to mistreat the poor with the following repeated and habitual behaviors:
- they did not assist the guests, even in the face of repeated requests for help;
- on several occasions they were tied to tables or beds to prevent them from moving;
- They washed them with cold water or, as punishment, they did not change them according to the satisfaction of their physiological needs or they left them in bed with dirty sheets;
- They washed them with soap from the washing machine, then made fun of them for their smell of “aloe vera”;
- they tried to cure scabies, according to the precise indications of the owner, with simple olive oil packets instead of correct drug therapy;
- administered expired medications to guests;
- They were denigrated, mortified and insulted in a habitual and specific way: “Disgusting, dirty, there is no more disgusting than you, don’t break my …”; “What a disgusting person, what a disgust, zero education, now I leave her on the chair all dirty with pee, like pigs ” this directed at a 100 year old person who was later forced to lie down alone as punishment; “He’s an ignorant, rude, janitor and a disgusting person” or threaten an old woman to tie her up, leave her full of feces and not wash her, always screaming and generating the cry of the poor woman.
All the elements that have made it possible to consolidate the evidence against the suspects and thus request and obtain the precautionary measure granted by the GIP of the Etna Court.
